Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado (born January 26, 1992 in Fairfield , California ), better known by her ring name Sasha Banks (formerly Mercedes KV ), is an American wrestler and is currently under contract with WWE .

She is a former Raw Women's Champion and was named 3rd Best Female Wrestler of 2015 and 2nd Best Female Wrestler of 2016 by Pro Wrestling Illustrated .

Life

Mercedes Kaestner-Varnado was born on January 26, 1992 as the eldest child of Reo and Judith Varnado. Since her father has German roots, she is half German and half African American. Her mother had to raise her and her autistic brother alone because her father left the family when she was two years old.

In search of ever better health facilities and schools for their son, the family traveled through the country, so that Kaestner-Varnado u. a. lived in Iowa and Minnesota before finally finding her new home in Boston at 16 . Due to her frequent changes of residence and in order to be able to take care of her brother more, Kaestner-Varnado did not attend a public school, but was taught online at home.

Her enthusiasm for professional wrestling developed around the age of 10 when she happened to see a WWE episode on television. From then on, she followed every episode and tried to be accepted into various wrestling schools, but was repeatedly rejected because of her young age. Her efforts only paid off shortly before her 18th birthday when a wrestling camp was held in Boston and Kaestner-Varnado was the only woman to successfully assert herself in the camp.

Since August 4, 2016 she has been married to Sarath Ton, who competed as a wrestler under his ring name Kid Mikaze in various independent American wrestling leagues and is now employed as a costume designer at WWE, where he a. who designed ring outfits for his wife, Triple H, Apollo Crews and the Bella Twins.

Kaestner-Varnado is the cousin of the rapper Snoop Dogg .

Wrestling career

Independent Leagues (2010-2012)

She began her career at Chaotic Wrestling under the name Mercedes KV . She made her debut on August 8, 2010 when she lost to Alexxis and Danny E with Nikki Roxx . She celebrated her first victory at the side of Nikki Roxx at the beginning of 2011 and soon afterwards her first success in a singles match when she defeated Mistress Belmont . On December 2, 2011, she defeated Alexxis in an I quit match and thus won the Chaotic Wrestling Women's Championship , the first title in her career. On August 18, 2012, it was announced that she had signed a contract with the WWE , which is why her Chaotic Wrestling Women's Championship was vacant, ending her reign after 260 days.

In addition to Chaotic Wrestling, she also got into the ring for New England Championship Wrestling and National Wrestling Alliance , among others . At National Wrestling Alliance she went under the ring name Miss Mercedes .

The BFFs and NXT Women's Champion (2012-2014)

At the beginning she performed under her old ring name Mercedes KV and stepped in house show on -Matches before the name in November Sasha Banks accepted. She lost her first house show match under the new name against Summer Rae. Her first win at WWE was on January 23, 2013 against Alicia Fox . In June she entered a tournament to determine the first NXT Women's Championship , but lost to Summer Rae in the first round. At WWE NXT , she formed the stable BFFs with Summer Rae and Charlotte . In mid-January 2014, Summer Rae was appointed to the main roster , after which the BFFs had to lose more often. At WrestleMania XXX , Banks was part of Triple H's entrance in his match against Daniel Bryan before, back at NXT, she won with Charlotte against Paige and Emma. In May she took part in another tournament for the NXT Women's Championship , won in the first round against Bayley , but then lost to Natalya . This was followed by smaller matches against Alexa Bliss and a reunion with Summer Rae when the full BFFs lost to Paige, Emma and Bayley. On July 3, 2014, she and Charlotte defeated Bayley and Becky Lynch , causing Charlotte to abandon her partner in an attack by Bayley. Shortly afterwards, the BFFs were officially dissolved by her in a backstage segment. In TakeOver: R Evolution , Sasha Banks lost the title match against Charlotte. At TakeOver: Rival , she won the NXT Women's Championship for the first time by defeating Charlotte, Bayley and Becky Lynch in a Fatal 4-Way Match . At TakeOver: Unstoppable , she met her old partner Becky Lynch, but Lynch failed to win the title. On July 15, 2015, she successfully defended her title against Charlotte. At TakeOver: Brooklyn , she lost her title to Bayley. At WWE Takeover Respect , the rematch followed, which she lost in a 30-minute Iron Man match .

Women's Revolution and Team BAD (2015-2016)

Sasha Banks played her first match on the main roster at WWE Main Event against Charlotte on December 30, 2014 , which she lost. This performance was unique, however, because it made its actual debut on July 13, 2015, after Stephanie McMahon announced a revolution in the Diven Divisíon. First she put Charlotte and Becky Lynch at the side of Paige before Naomi and Tamina came out and claimed their place. In response, Stephanie McMahon announced Sasha Banks, who was joining Naomi and Tamina. From then on, the 3 were on the road as Team BAD . Team BAD feuded against Team PCB (Paige, Charlotte and Becky Lynch) and against Team Bella ( Nikki Bella , Brie Bella and Alicia Fox ). She made her PPV debut six days later when she faced Charlotte and Brie Bella in a triple threat match , which Charlotte eventually won. At SummerSlam , the three teams met in full, but Team PCB won the match. On the November 2, 2015 edition of Raw, she lost to Paige in a Fatal Four Way match that also included Becky Lynch and Brie Bella. On December 14, 2015 she won against Becky Lynch at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs . In the December 28, 2015 edition of Raw , she won again against Becky Lynch. She injured herself after the match and was therefore out. On January 24, 2016, she made her return at the Royal Rumble by attacking both of them after the match between Charlotte and Becky Lynch. During the February 1, 2016 edition of Raw, she was attacked by her stable colleagues Naomi and Tamina, disbanding Team BAD . At the PPV WWE Fastlane on February 21, 2016, she and Becky Lynch defeated their former stable colleagues Naomi and Tamina in a tag team match . On April 3, 2016 at WrestleMania 32 , Banks, Charlotte and Becky Lynch played a triple threat match for the newly introduced WWE Women's Championship , which Charlotte won.

Raw Women's Champion (2016-2017)

After she won a tag team match with the debuting Bayley against Charlotte and Dana Brooke at Battleground on July 24, 2016, the next RAW edition saw a title match for the WWE Women's Championship between Sasha Banks and Charlotte the day after. Sasha Banks won this one, making her champion for the first time. On August 21, 2016, she lost the title to Charlotte again at SummerSlam . She defeated Charlotte in the October 3, 2016 edition of Raw and won the WWE Raw Women's Championship for the second time . On October 30, 2016 at PPV Hell in a Cell , she and Charlotte Flair were the first women to contest a Hell In A Cell match , this match being the main event of the PPV, which was a first in WWE history. In said match, she lost her title to Charlotte Flair. In the November 28 edition of RAW, she defeated Charlotte Flair in a title rematch in a Falls Count Anywhere match , which she won the WWE Raw Women's Championship for the third time. On December 18, 2016 at WWE Roadblock: End of the Line , she lost the title again to Charlotte Flair. At SummerSlam on August 20, 2017, she defeated Alexa Bliss to win her fourth Raw Women's Championship . Almost two weeks later, on August 28, 2017, Banks lost the title again to Bliss on Raw.

The Boss 'N' Hug Connection and Time Out (2017-2019)

On February 17, 2019, Banks and her tag team partner Bayley won the newly introduced WWE Women's Tag Team Championship in an Elimination Chamber Match in which the teams Nia Jax & Tamina, Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose , Naomi & Carmella , Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan and Billie Kay & Peyton Royce were involved. The reign lasted 49 days and finally lost the title to The IIconics Billie Kay & Peyton Royce in a Fatal 4 Way Tag Team Match in which Nia Jax and Tamina as well as The Divas of Doom Beth Phoenix and Natalya were involved on April 7, 2019 WrestleMania 35 . Banks expressed your displeasure with why she was granted time off.

Return and heel-turn (since 2019)

In August 2019, she made her comeback and attacked Natalya . On September 15, 2019, she played a match against Becky Lynch for the Raw Women's Championship , which she won via DQ after Lynch knocked out the referee with a chair. On October 6, 2019, she lost another match against Becky Lynch for the Raw Women's Championship . This was a Hell In A Cell match . As part of the WWE Draft, Banks switched from Raw to SmackDown on October 11, 2019 . On November 24, 2019, she played a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match against Natalya, Asuka , Charlotte Flair , Kairi Sane, Sarah Logan, Rhea Ripley, Io Shirai, Bianca at the WWE Survivor Series together with Carmella , Dana Brooke, Lacey Evans and Nikki Cross Belair , Toni Storm and Candice LeRae. She lost that match. On June 5, 2020, she won the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship again with Bayley . For this they defeated Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross. On 27 July 2020 she won the Raw Women's Championship from Asuka . The reign lasted 27 days and lost the title to Asuka on August 23, 2020. On August 30, 2020, they lost the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship after a reign of 86 days to Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax .
