Shayna Andrea Baszler (born August 8, 1980 in Sioux Falls , South Dakota ) is an American wrestler and former mixed martial arts fighter who is currently competing on the WWE Raw brand of World Wrestling Entertainment .

Life

Education and training

Shayna Baszler grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her father is of German descent while her mother has Chinese ancestry.

Shayna Baszler attended MidAmerica Nazarene University , where she studied theology . However, shortly after graduating, she started training MMA. Her coach was former UFC fighter Josh Barnett and catch wrestler Billy Robinson . In addition to MMA training, Barnett also worked on Baszler's personality and trained her for interviews. He advised her to take a guitar to the MMA cage as a sign of an open-minded and direct personality. ESP's guitar would become their trademark at the UFC. He also gave her the nickname "Queen of Spades," based on the card tricks she performed from time to time.

MMA career

Shayna Baszler had her first professional fight on June 3, 2006 against Amanda Buckner at Mix Fighting Championship . There she was defeated by her opponent after a technical knockout . Her second fight took place again at New Fight Films on March 10, 2007. She won against Samantha Anderson with the Kimura, an elbow lever that Masahiko Kimura introduced in judo and which became her trademark from then on.

On July 27, 2007, she made her debut for the Elite Xtreme Combat organization . There she won three fights against Jan Finney , Jennifer Tate and Keiko Tamai within a year and rose to the top fighters in the league. At the major event EliteXC: Unfinished Business broadcast by CBS on July 26, 2008, she was defeated by Cris Cyborg via TKO. After EliteXC closed on October 20, 2008, Baszler moved to Strikeforce . There she had two fights. On June 19, 2009, she lost to Sarah Kaufman by referee decision. On January 30, 2010, she faced Megumi Yabushita and won by submission.

From 2010 to 2012 she worked for various organizations. Her greatest achievement was winning the TCI Women's 140 lbs Championship and the FCF Women's Bantamweight Grand Prix Championship .

In 2012 Baszler entered for the Invicta Fighting Championships . Her first fight was against Sara McMann as the main fight of the evening on July 28, 2012 at Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMan . She lost after a controversial referee decision. On October 6, 2012, she defeated Sarah D'Alelio and on January 5, 2013, she was defeated by Alexis Davis.

In 2013 she came to Ultimate Fighting Championship , where she appeared in the television series The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate performed. She chose Ronda Rousey to join her team after a fight against Colleen Schneider . However, she lost her first fight against Julianna Peña . Also in the next season of the series The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. Australia was supposed to compete but had to withdraw due to an injury.

She then went to UFC 177 and lost to Bethe Correia . Also at the UFC Fight Night 62 she was unsuccessful and lost to Amanda Nunes . She then asked for her release to pursue a career in wrestling.

Independent (2015-2017)

On March 1, 2015, Shayna Baszler made her debut on the ROH 13th Anniversary Show of the Ring of Honor (ROH) when she accompanied the ReDRagon tag team ( Bobby Fish and Kyle O'Reilly ) to the ring and held a promo after their match . She made her in-ring debut on September 26, 2015 at Quintessential Pro Wrestling (QPG) in Reno Nevada. She lost her first fight against cheerleader Melissa and was attacked after the match by Nicole Matthews , with whom she subsequently feuded. She then went to Absolute Intense Wrestlin (AIW), World Wonder Ring Stardom and Shimmer Women Athletes , where she met Mercedes Martinez , who she trained from then on alongside Josh Barnett.

WWE (since 2017)

On July 13, 2017, Baszler competed for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for the first time. She was part of the Mae Young Classics tournament and lost to Kairi Sane in the final . She then signed with WWE NXT and trained at the WWE Performance Center. She made her NXT debut on December 27, 2017 when she attacked Kairi Sane. In her first match on January 10, 2018, she defeated Dakota Kai . A feud began with Ember Moon that eventually ended with winning the NXT Women's Championship at the NXT TakeOver: New Orleans . She lost the title after 133 days against Kairi Sane, but won a rematch and became the first two-time champion of the title. She held the title for 416 days. before losing him to Rhea Ripley on December 18, 2019 . Together with the 133-day first reign, it broke Asuka's record of 523 days. In 2020 she made her debut on the main roster on Raw .

On August 30, 2020, she won the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship together with Nia Jax . For this they defeated Bayley and Sasha Banks .
