Sara McMann (* 24. September 1980 in Takoma Park, Maryland ) is an American Olympic wrestler and MMA fighter who in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the bantamweight fight. She won a silver medal in the weight class up to 63 kg body weight at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .

Life

Sara McMann grew up in Lock Haven and Iowa City . Her older brother was a wrestler and she also enjoyed the sport as a teenager. She started doing this at the age of 14. She later became a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club in Scottsdale .

In 1999 Sara McMann became US Junior Champion and was then sent to Budapest for the Junior World Championship . There she took 6th place in the weight class up to 58 kg. That was the start of her international wrestling career. In 2000 she won her first medal at an international championship with the silver medal at the Pan American Championships in Cali / Colombia in the weight class up to 62 kg . It then started in 2000 at two world championships. First she finished 5th at the Junior World Championships in Nantes and then she did not get past 9th place at the World Championships in Sofia . Nikola Hartmann-Dünser from Austria won the title there in her weight class .

In 2001 Sara McMann became USA Champion ahead of Tonya Evinger and Tori Adams. At the Pan American Championships this year in Santo Domingo , she won another medal with 3rd place. At the 2001 World Championships in Sofia , she lost to Rena Iwama from Japan and Meng Lili from China and only came in 15th. After another title win at the USA Championship, where she defeated Kristie Marano in the final , Sara McMann finished 13th in the World Championship in Chalkida / Greece after a victory over Yoon So-young, South Korea and a defeat against Kaori Icho from Japan. Place hardly better than in 2001.

In 2003, Sara McMann defeated Kristie Marano again in the USA Championship final. This year she made her international breakthrough, because she then won the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in the weight class up to 63 kg in front of Viola Yanik from Canada and Mabel Fonseca Ramirez from Puerto Rico and thus won her first international title. She was also able to convince at the 2003 World Cup in New York and after victories over Sara Eriksson , Sweden , Kristine Odrina Orbowa, Latvia , Aljona Kartaschowa , Russia and Viola Yanik and a defeat in the final battle against Kaori Icho, she secured the vice world title.

At the USA Championship 2004 Sara McMann lost in the final of the weight class up to 63 kg against Kristie Marano. But she was able to prevail in the US Olympic Trials against Alaina Berube and thus secured her ticket to the Olympic Games in Athens . In Athens she won over Meng Lili , Viola Yanik and Stavroula Zygouri , Greece , before losing to Kaori Icho again in the final. But she won the Olympic silver medal .

In 2005 Sara McMann could not start at the USA Championship due to an injury. But she secured her ticket to the World Championships in Budapest with a victory over Alaina Berube at the World Championship trials . There she lost in the first fight against Kaori Icho, but could still fight for a bronze medal in the consolation round with victories over Helena Alandi , Sweden and Anna Polownewa , Russia. In 2006 she became US champion again, but lost at the World Championships in Guangzhou in her second fight against Monika Ewa Michalik from Poland , with which she was eliminated and only came in 12th place.

At the US Championships in 2007, she managed to win the title again with a victory in the final over Randi Miller and also at the Pan American Games 2007 in Rio de Janeiro , the winner in the weight class up to 63 kg was Sara McMann. She relegated Yoselin Rojas Urbina from Venezuela and Megan Dolan from Canada to the places. At this year's World Championships in Baku , she won another medal with a bronze medal behind Kaori Icho and Jelena Schalygina from Kazakhstan .

In January 2008 Sara McMann competed in the Team World Cup in Taiyuan / China, where she defeated Mio Nishimaki from Japan and Julija Ostaptschuk from Ukraine . At the USA Championships this year and at the trials for the Olympic Games in Beijing , she was relegated to 2nd place by Randi Miller both times. A start at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 would have been out of the question anyway because of her pregnancy.

She temporarily ended her career as a wrestler in 2008 because she became the mother of a daughter. In December 2009, however, she took part again in Fort Lauderdale at the world championship in NoGi Grappling, a new wrestling sport that combines elements from sumo with elements from other martial arts. She won there in the weight class up to 63 kg in front of her compatriot Shayne Baszler and the Canadian Sheila Bird. The sporting value of this victory, however, cannot be equated with victory in the Olympic sport of wrestling.

MMA career

On May 28, 2011, McMann made her professional MMA debut on Universal Cage Combat: Revolution. She defeated Christina Marks by giving up in the first round. She played a total of 16 fights for the UFC, of ​​which she was able to win 11 (as of February 2018).
