Toccara Montgomery (born December 30, 1982 in Cleveland, Ohio ) is an American wrestler . She was runner-up in 2001 and 2003.

Career

Toccara Montgomery began wrestling in 1998 at East Technical High School in Cleveland. She was trained there by Kip Flanik. From 2001 she studied Education at the University of the Cumberlands and also became a member of the Cumberland University Wrestling Club . A little later she also joined the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and was trained there by Joe Corso. Her successes on the wrestling mat began in 2000 and actually ended in 2004, although she continued to play for the University of the Cumberlands until 2006. From 2004, he also held an office as assistant trainer at this university. Since May 2010 she has been the head coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri . Toccara Montgomery was one of the first African-Americans to reach the top of the world.

In 2000 she took 4th place in the USA championship in the up to 68 kg class, but already one year later, in 2001, she became American champion in the same weight class, leaving such renowned wrestlers as Kristie Marano and Katie Downing behind. She won the same title in 2002 (up to 67 kg) and 2003 and 2004 (up to 72 kg). In 2003 she relegated Samantha Lang and Iris Smith and in 2004 Stephany Lee , Katie Downing and Randi Miller to the places.

Toccara Montgomery's international career began in 2000 with a 2nd place behind Anita Schätzle from Germany at the World Junior Championships in Nantes in the weight class up to 68 kg. She took the same place at the 2001 World Junior Championships in Martigny / Switzerland , where she again came second behind Anita Schätzle. In 2001 she started at the active world championships in Sofia , where she defeated Monika Kowalski from Poland , Yanli Yang from China , Heidi Hannele Martti from Finland and Swetlana Jarosewitsch from Russia in the weight class up to 68 kg , and was in the final against the multiple world champion Christine Nordhagen from Canada . This final fight was won by Christine Nordhagen, but Toccara Montgomery, as a 19-year-old newcomer to world championships, could be very satisfied with the vice-world title.

In 2002 Toccara Montgomery won the Pan American Championship in Maracaibo in the weight class up to 67 kg before Xiomara Guevara from Venezuela . At this year's World Championships in Chalkida , Greece , she lost in her first fight in the weight class up to 72 kg, to which she had since switched, to the Chinese Wang Xu and, because of the very strange regulations at the time, won her second Fight over Silvana Abdullina from Kazakhstan only move to 10th place. In August 2003 she won the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in the weight class up to 72 kg in front of Ohenewa Akuffo from Canada and Yasmily Ramos from Venezuela. At the World Cup , which was held a month later in New York , she won over Zarife Yildirim from Turkey , Marie Nicole Diedhiou from Senegal , Marina Gastl from Austria and Wang Xu, against whom she successfully took revenge for her defeat at the 2002 World Cup. She was thus in the final battle, in which she could not do anything against the five-time Japanese World Champion Kyoko Hamaguchi and with 0: 2 rounds and 1: 4 techn. Was subject to points. This was the second time she was runner-up in the world championship.

In December 2003, Toccara Montgomery secured the starting place at the Olympic Trials in Athens in the weight class up to 72 kg with two straight wins over Kristie Marano . Afterwards, she prepared intensively for the Olympic Games in Athens with national coach Terry Steiner in the Olympic Training Center of the US Wrestling Association in Colorado Springs. However, in the run-up to these games, their participation in preparatory tournaments did not bring entirely satisfactory results. At the Dave Schultz Memorial in Colorado Springs, for example, she only came third behind Anita Schätzle and Stephany Lee. She also took the same place at the pre-Olympic tournament in Athens, where she came in behind Kyoko Hamaguchi and the Spaniard Maider Unda Gonzales de Audicana . In June 2004, however, at the so-called Titan Games in Atlanta , which took place in the form of an international match between the USA and Canada, she won a shoulder victory after 3.14 minutes over Christine Nordhagen.

At the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, Toccara Montgomery had a lot of loophole, because she had to compete in the weight class up to 72 kg against three enormously strong opponents, all three of whom were multiple world champions or were about to become. In her first fight she lost to Kyoko Hamaguchi with 0: 2 rounds and 4: 8 techn. Points, then she defeated Stanka Slatewa from Bulgaria and lost in her third fight against Christine Nordhagen with 0: 2 rounds and 3: 8 techn. Points. She was eliminated and only came in 7th place.

She must have been so disappointed with this performance that she practically ended her international career at the age of 22. She started in competitions for her university until 2006. In December 2005 she wrestled in Burnaby in an international match USA against Canada in a weight class up to 82 kg set up especially for this fight against Shayle Turcotte and was subject to this on points. Shortly afterwards she was able to defeat this wrestler in a comparison of her two university teams. In 2006, she managed to win the US student championship in the weight class up to 80 kg, which was only available in student wrestling.
