The Cumberland University is a private university in the US state of Tennessee . It was founded in 1842, but the current buildings were built between 1892 and 1896.

history

The university was founded by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church . In 1843 it received its statutes from the state of Tennessee. The Cumberland Presbyterian Church also established the law school in 1852 (ten years after it was built), which was the first in Tennessee. In 1854 the university also got a theological faculty.

The original building was designed by the architect William Strickland . These included the faculties of art, law and theology. During the American Civil War , however, these were destroyed by the Union Army .

Like almost all other private universities, Cumberland University went through a difficult time during the economic crisis in the USA from 1929 onwards. After the Second World War , a large number of sponsors and educational programs changed in a very short time. In the spring of 1946, the Tennessee Baptist Convention took over the administration of the college. In 1951 the College of Arts and Sciences , which included the faculties of art and theology, was closed. All that remained was the School of Law . In 1956, the previously state university changed its status and became a private university. The College of Arts and Sciences reopened. This faculty is also known as the Cumberland College of Tennessee . The duration of the course was shortened from four to two years, so the university was degraded to a so-called junior university . The School of Law moved to Samford University in Birmingham ( Alabama ) in 1962 . In 1982, the academic program was expanded so that Cumberland College again offered a four-year study package. This resulted in Cumberland University returning to its old name.

Cumberland University believes that a broad education based on the liberal arts is the best foundation for lifelong learning. Graduates include 14 governors , over 80 members of Congress , two judges of the Supreme Court of the United States, and three United States ambassadors.
