Corey Wilkes

Corey Wilkes (born June 3, 1979 in Chicago ) is an American fusion and jazz trumpeter . He is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) .

Live and act

As a child, Wilkes was influenced by blues , R&B , soul , funk and jazz . At age ten, he began playing the trumpet, which he played in the Illinois All State Honors Jazz Combo during high school ; he then studied at Berklee College of Music a . a. at Tiger Okoshi . He began performing on the Chicago music scene in the early 2000s and has been a trumpeter with the Art Ensemble of Chicago since 2004 ( Non-Cognitive Aspects of the City , 2004). He also worked on various projects with DJs such as DJ Logic , Osunlade and Josh Deep , as well as with Kahil El'Zabar's Ascension Loft Series . Wilkes was artist in residence and lecturer at the Jazz Institute of Chicago .

In 2007 he recorded his debut album Drop It with keyboardist Robert Irving III for Delmark Records , followed by the quintet album Cries from the Ghetto ( Pi Recordings , 2009, with Junius Paul , among others ). Wilkes lives in Chicago and plays regularly with Ernest Dawkins , Von Freeman , Fred Anderson , Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra , the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble , Nicole Mitchell , Roscoe Mitchell , Evan Parker ( Boustrophedon 2006), Will Calhoun and James Carter .
