From Freeman
Earl Lavon "Von" Freeman Sr. (born October 3, 1923 in Chicago , Illinois ; † August 11, 2012 ibid) was an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , composition ).
Life
Freeman, the son of a policeman and amateur trumpet player, who with Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines was friends, learned as a child the piano, Klarinette- and saxophone and attended DuSable High School , where he under the guidance of Captain Walter Dyett together with Gene Ammons in Ensemble playing was trained in a band. After playing in Horace Henderson's orchestra for a year , he was a member of the US Navy Hellcats , a band of the American Navy , during his military service from 1941 to 1945 .
Various band leaders such as King Kolax , Billy Eckstine and later Miles Davis could not convince him to go on tour. Rather, he stayed in Chicago and was a member of the house band of Chicago's Pershing Ballroom until 1950 ; For a short time he also worked with Sun Ra in 1948/49 . Then he formed a band with his brothers George and Bruce Freeman and Ahmad Jamal , who was replaced by Andrew Hill in 1951 . In 1956 he accompanied Andrew Hill and Malachi Favors the doo-wop formation De'bonairs for the Ping label . In the 1960s he was active in the blues scene , recorded with Milt Trenier , in whose band he worked from 1966 to 1969, but also worked with Jimmy Reed , Otis Rush and Gene Chandler . Then he turned back to jazz and performed with Dexter Gordon . His first album under his own name Doin 'It Right Now was created in 1972 on the initiative of Rahsaan Roland Kirk , who also produced the record. In 1982 he played the album Fathers & Sons with his son Chico Freeman and Ellis Marsalis with his sons Wynton and Branford . In the 1990s and 2000s he recorded several albums for the labels SteepleChase , Delmark , Nessa and Premonition .
