Otis Rush (born April 29, 1935 in Philadelphia , Neshoba County , Mississippi , † September 29, 2018 ) was an American blues guitarist and singer .

biography

After moving to Chicago in the early 1950s , Rush soon became a well-known guitarist in the local blues scene. He started making recordings in 1956 and had two hits in 1957 with All Your Love (I Miss Loving) and I Can't Quit You Baby , the latter by Willie Dixon . All Your Love (I Miss Loving) has been covered several times over the years by famous bands, including John Mayall on Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton , Aerosmith , Stevie Ray Vaughan , Gary Moore on Still Got the Blues and the Steve Miller Band .

In the 1960s, Rush also toured Europe. One of his most famous albums is Moanin 'in the Morning from 1968. In 1984 he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame . In 1999 he won a Grammy for the album Any Place I'm Goin ' in the category "Best Traditional Blues Album".

Otis Rush's style, known as the "West Side Chicago Blues," has been compared to that of Luther Allison , Magic Sam , Buddy Guy and Albert King . He influenced blues greats like Michael Bloomfield , Eric Clapton , Peter Green and Stevie Ray Vaughan. A specialty is Rush's guitar technique. Rush was left-handed and played left-handed instruments, but they were strung as right-handed guitars (see photo on the right). As a result, the treble strings on Rush's guitars were up and struck first when playing the tee. The same stringing sequence was used by left-handed guitarists Albert King and Dick Dale .

In 2011, Rolling Stone listed Rush as 53rd of the 100 best guitarists of all time .
