Jason Moran
Jason Joseph Moran (* 21st January 1975 in Houston , Texas ) is an American jazz - pianist .
Moran graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas in 1993 . Moran's role models are Thelonious Monk , Andrew Hill and Don Pullen . He played the piano for a long time in Greg Osby's band and emerged in 1999 with his album Soundtrack To Human Motian . In 2003 and 2004, Moran received the award of “Best Young Artist” in three categories in a survey of critics by the American jazz magazine Down Beat .
Since the album Facing Left he has had a regular formation called The Bandwagon with Taurus Mateen ( bass ) and Nasheet Waits ( drums ), with whom he had already played on the recently released Blue Note Allstar project New Directions . Marvin Sewell ( guitar ), previously with Cassandra Wilson for six years and most recently its musical director, has completed the band since the album Same Mother .
Jason Moran's classical training and the resulting access to the piano play a significant role in his musical practice. His style is considered very focused and open to many musical influences and perspectives.
Jason Moran lives and works in New York . He is married to the mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran .
In 2010 he became a MacArthur Fellow and in 2011 he was awarded the ECHO Jazz (instrumentalist of the year international - piano / keyboards).
In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
