Mark Shim (* 21st November 1973 in Kingston , Jamaica ) is a jazz - saxophonist .

Live and act

Born in Jamaica , Shim came to Canada with his parents as an eight month old . Five years later, the family settled in the US city of Richmond , the capital of the state of Virginia .

A jazz course he began at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1991 , Shim continued at William Paterson University ( New Jersey ) in 1993 , but decided prematurely to swap lessons with the stage and moved to Brooklyn , where he took part in jam sessions . Hamiet Bluiett noticed him during a session in Harlem and made his debut in 1995 as a guest musician on his album "Young Warrior, Old Warrior". He then appeared on albums by Mose Allison , Betty Carter , Greg Osby and the Mingus Big Band , of which he became a member.

In 1998, Blue Note released his first album, "Mind over Matter", which was followed in 2000 by "Turbulent Flow". Both albums have a modern look and are often quite fast-paced and complex in terms of play. They are also shaped by their guest musicians, for example guitarist David Fiuczynski , who is known for his “Jazz Punk”, plays on the first album , while Stefon Harris ( vibraphone ) and Edward Simon ( piano and Fender Rhodes ) for a special one on the second album Note worry.

In 1999 Blue Note entrusted Greg Osby with a project in which he sponsored Jason Moran as well as the young Blue Note musicians Shim and Harris and recorded the album "New Directions" with them. Following these albums, Shim no longer appeared as a leader. In recent years he has worked with Steve Lehman , Carmen Lundy , Onaje Allan Gumbs , Ben Sidran, and Luis Perdomo ; he visited Europe with the headhunters led by Donald Harrison and T. M. Stevens . In 2018 he is a member of the Vijay Iyer Sextet. Since 2016 he is part of Justin Brown Ensemble Nyeusi and played on the eponymous debut album in 2018 electronic wind controller .
