Ben Sidran

Ben Sidran (born August 14, 1943 in Chicago ) is an American jazz musician (pianist, organist, singer), musicologist, journalist and producer.

Life

Sidran, who grew up in Racine , Wisconsin, studied from 1962 to 1966 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison , before continuing his philosophy studies at the University of Sussex in England. He did his PhD on "A Cultural History of Black Music in America"; "Black Talk" (1972), the book publication for the doctorate, became a standard work. He began his career as a musician in 1967 in Steve Miller's band , for whom he wrote the hit "Space Cowboy". He also worked on productions for the Rolling Stones , Peter Frampton , Eric Clapton and Charlie Watts before returning to America in 1970, working with Boz Scaggs and continuing to turn to jazz. In 1983, for example, he presented the album “Bop City” with Eddie Gomez and Peter Erskine , and in 1987 “Have You Met Barcelona?” With Johnny Griffin , Jimmy Woode and Ben Riley . He made a guest appearance in Paris with Gil Evans . His solo records are partly reminiscent of Mose Allison . On "Life Is a Lesson" (1993, with Mike Richmond and Danny Gottlieb ) he dealt with the Jewish liturgy. His “Concert For Garcia Lorca” (2000) was nominated for a Grammy . He has performed with Dizzy Gillespie , Bobby McFerrin and Manhattan Transfer at Carnegie Hall , with the “ Brecker Brothers ” at the Montreux Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival .

As a radio and television presenter and producer of television series (such as the 1989 Ace Award-winning series “New Visions”) he worked with Diana Ross , Booker T. , Phil Woods , Sarah Vaughan , Herbie Hancock , Wynton Marsalis and Annie Ross together. He also worked as a music producer with his label “GoJazz”, for example for Tony Williams , Richie Cole and Georgie Fame . He writes for Rolling Stone , Esquire and other magazines. The keyboardist Leo Sidran is his son.
