Mike Richmond

Michael "Mike" Richmond (born February 26, 1948 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American jazz bassist.

Mike Richmond started out as a guitarist and switched to bass in his high school orchestra. He studied music at Temple University , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree, and took private lessons with Jimmy Garrison . He worked with musicians like Stan Getz , Dizzy Gillespie , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Don Cherry , Karl Berger , George Gruntz , Walter Norris , Barry Finnerty , Mario Stantchev , the folk blues singer and songwriter Richie Havens and the Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar . Since 1980 he was a member of the Mingus Dynasty . In 1989 he played in a trio with George Gruntz and Adam Nussbaum ( Serious Fun , Enja 1990).

In the 1990s he was a member of John Fischer's group Interface with Vincent Chancey , Theo Jörgensmann and Ben Kilmer and worked with the Bujazzo . In 1991 he took part in the concert of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones in Montreux . He currently plays in the Nuvo combo with Dave Schroeder, Rich Shemaria, Brad Shepik and John Hadfield.

Richmond teaches at New York University , where he received the Teacher of the Year Award in 1994 . He has written a standard work on playing the walking bass .
