Badal Roy

Badal Roy ( Amerendra Roy Choudhury ; * 1945 in Kumilla , British India , today Bangladesh ) is a tabla player who is active in the field of improvisational music and jazz.

Act

Badal Roy emigrated to the USA in 1968, where he initially earned his living as a waiter in Indian restaurants. He then appeared as a raga player with Steve Gorn in a Manhattan restaurant, where Miles Davis became aware of him.

After recording with Davis ( On the Corner , Get Up with It ) and John McLaughlin , he worked with musicians such as Herbie Mann , Dave Liebman , Don Cherry , Pharoah Sanders , Perry Robinson , Jon Hassell , Dizzy Gillespie , Lonnie Liston Smith , Andreas Vollenweider , Yoko Ono and Nana Simopoulos together. In 1988 he became a member of Ornette Coleman's band Prime Time , of which he was a member until 2000. He has also worked with the Brazilian guitar duo Duofel since the mid-1990s .
