Jon Hassell (born March 22, 1937 in Memphis (Tennessee) , † June 26, 2021 ) was an American trumpeter and composer of fusion music . He was known for his influence on the world music scene and his acoustic and electronic changes to the sound of the trumpet.

Live and act

After a childhood in Memphis, an interest in cool jazz and a classical education at the Eastman School of Music and at the Catholic University , Hassell studied in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen . He returned in 1967 back to the US, where he Terry Riley met and at the initial reception of In C was involved. During his doctoral studies in Buffalo he was married to Katrina Krimsky and a member of the Dream House ensemble of La Monte Young . He became over pundit in the New York minimalist scene Pran Nath known, with whom he took lessons from 1972. His classical Indian singing lessons opened up opportunities for him to play a new kind of trumpet: The language-like modulated air currents that Jon Hassell lets flow through his instrument lead to the creation of seemingly “undefined” ( microtonal ) sounds.

Hassell used the term "Fourth World" to describe his musical style: "My expression Fourth World describes a sensual coordinate system in which organic forms can be found for the balance between ancient wisdom and the latest technologies."

Karl Lippegaus describes Hassell as one of the few fusion trumpeters who have not completely dedicated themselves to the influence of Miles Davis , but have created their own sound. However, in Grove Music Online , Mark Gilbert points out that Hassell Davis is very similar in use to electronics, modal harmonies, and lyricism. Trumpeters like Arve Henriksen and Nils Petter Molvær were influenced by Hassell's musical style, which relativizes times and spaces.

Musicians like Brian Eno , Peter Gabriel or David Sylvian discovered their own Ambient World visions after playing with Jon Hassell . Together with Pete Scaturro , Hassell wrote the theme music for the television series Practice - The Lawyers . For the Kronos Quartet he wrote the string quartet Pano de Costa, which was published on their album White Man Sleeps .

He died on June 26, 2021 at the age of 84.
