Pran Nath ( Hindi प्राणनाथ Prāṇnāth ; born November 3, 1918 in Lahore , † June 13, 1996 in Berkeley ) was a classical North Indian singer who was very influential as a teacher of the Kirana Gharana . The specialty of the Kirana or Krana style is a "wonderful melodic modulation."

Live and act

When he was thirteen, Pran Nath left his family, who refused to allow him to become a musician. He served the singer Abdul Wahid Khan (1878-1949) before he was allowed to study with him. In 1937 he became a musician with All India Radio . Then he worked as a music teacher and lecturer, from 1966 to 1970 at the University of Delhi . In 1972 he was invited to Mills College as a visiting professor . He later held master classes in India lasting several weeks, teaching in Bremen in 1995 and in Paris in 1996.

In 1970 Pran Nath came to the USA for the first time, where he visited La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela . In the following years he also gave numerous concerts in Europe. In 1972 he founded the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York City , where he has taught since then. Pran Nath's singing students include La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela Terry Riley , Don Cherry , Lee Konitz , Jon Hassell , Michael Harrison , David Byrne , Charlemagne Palestine , Henry Flynt , Toni Marcus , Jon Gibson , George Brooks , Ingrid Sertso , Brian Eno , Yoshi Wada , Rhys Chatham , WA Mathieu , Shabda Kahn , Catherine Christer Hennix and Simone Forti . The lessons were “unparalleled in their intensity” because the students lived with Pran Nath and practiced all day.

As a composer he wrote numerous works, including the composition Aba Kee Tayk Hamaree for the Kronos Quartet for (his) voice and the string quartet , which was published in 1993 on the Kronos Quartet album Short Stories .
