Charlemagne Palestine (actually Charles Martin ; born August 15, 1945 or August 15, 1947 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American minimalist composer and object and installation artist. Along with La Monte Young , Terry Riley and Philip Glass, he is one of the pioneers of minimal music . He is best known for his live shows, where he surrounds himself and his piano with numerous cuddly toys , smokes dozens of clove cigarettes and drinks cognac with them .

Life

Charles Martin was born in New York to Eastern European Jews and studied at New York University , Columbia University , Mannes College of Music and the California Institute of the Arts .

After the death of his father, he performed daily at the Carillon , first in synagogues and later in the Episcopal Church of St. Thomas' Church on Fifth Avenue . There he often improvised for hours after his performances. He soon made a name for himself with his appearances in the New York avant-garde scene and musicians and artists such as Tony Conrad , Moondog , La Monte Young and John Cale visited the church to listen to Palestine's improvisations. In 1974 he published his best-known work Strumming Music , in which he played two different notes in rapid alternation for 45 minutes. After a few albums, he initially did not produce any further pieces of music and turned to installation art.

After artists like Nick Cave or Thurston Moore named Palestine as an important influence from the mid-1990s , some of his early works were re-released. As a result, other solo albums and numerous collaborations with artists such as Mika Vainio , Pita , Pan Sonic , David Coulter , Michael Gira , Jean Marie Mathoul , Tony Conrad , Perlonex , Keith Rowe , Terry Jennings , Robert Feldman , Rhys Chatham , Christoph were released Heemann , Simone Forti , Joachim Montessuis , Janek Schaefer and the NO! Art artist Mama Baer .

After a few years in California, where Palestine taught at the California Institute of the Arts , he now lives and works in Brussels, Belgium .
