Thurston Moore (born July 25, 1958 in Coral Gables , Florida ) is an American guitarist , songwriter and singer who was best known for the band Sonic Youth .

biography

Moore was born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida and raised in Bethel , Connecticut . A degree in journalism, which he began in 1976 at Western Connecticut State University , he broke off after a semester, and then moved to New York . In 1980 he became a member of Glenn Branca's ensemble, in which Lee Ranaldo was already playing at the time . It was there that he first encountered the alternative guitar tunings that would later become a typical trademark of Sonic Youth's guitar work. Moore also recorded some of his first symphonies with Branca .

Moore later released several solo albums, including Psychic Hearts in 1995 , Root in 1999 , Trees Outside the Academy in 2007 and Demolished Thoughts in 2011, and co-founded the Dim Stars side project with Richard Hell . He also worked with Borbetomagus .

Moore also runs the independent label Ecstatic Peace! , on which recordings of Sonic Youth appear rarely. In addition to some works by artists such as Lydia Lunch or Karlheinz Stockhausen , works by unknown musicians such as Fursaxa, Hush Arbors and Arthur Doyle appear there .

He married Kim Gordon in 1984 and became parents in 1994. In October 2011, Moore and Gordon announced the end of their 27-year marriage. After the breakup, Thurston and his new partner moved from New York to London .

In 2012, YOKOKIMTHURSTON was released, an album from a collaboration between Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Yoko Ono . The solo album The Best Day , released in October 2014 , again on Matador Records , received good reviews.

In 2011, the Rolling Stone listed Moore 99th of the 100 best guitarists of all time . In a list from 2003 he was ranked 34th.
