Borbetomagus (band)
Borbetomagus is an American improvisation ensemble of noise , which is considered to be the pioneer of aggressive improvised noise music.
history
The group was formed in 1979 when saxophonists Jim Sauter and Don Dietrich met guitarist Donald Miller . The trio named themselves rather coincidentally after the Celtic name of Worms . It received no exchange with other musicians of the New York noise scene, for example with John Zorn , but has been recording with improvisation musicians from the European scene such as Tristan Honsinger , Peter Kowald or Hugh Davies since 1980 . In 1984 it made its first appearance in Europe; it played at the Leipzig Jazz Days and had a joint appearance with the Swiss duoVoice crack ; later two recordings were made with this duo. In the late 1980s, the group worked as a quartet with bassist Adam Nodelman. The group temporarily expanded its instruments to include the accordion , glass harmonica and harp . In 2006 the ensemble performed together with Hijokaidan at the Canadian Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville .
Sauter and Dietrich often place the opening of their saxophones against each other when playing. The group has influenced American bands and musicians such as Sonic Youth , Pelt , Thomas Ankersmit and Kevin Drumm . Filmmaker Jef Mertens portrayed the group in his film Borbetomagus: A Pollock of Sounds (2016).
