Kevin Drumm (* 1970 in South Holland , Cook County , Illinois ) is an American musician in the field of electronic music and an avant-garde table guitar player.

Musical career

After initially playing in various rock bands, Drumm devoted himself to experimental playing styles in the Chicago improvisation scene in the 1990s and quickly became one of the world's most famous guitar players for prepared guitar. He experimented with magnets, tie clips, chains, violin bows and nail scissors. Soon after, he added a laptop and modular synthesizer to his equipment and expanded his work to include an electro-acoustic way of playing and composing. In 1997 his solo debut album s / t was released .

music

Drumm's music is characterized by a variety of different musical approaches. Acoustic and electronic forms of expression merge into sound surfaces, in which mostly electronic individual events receive the structural dramaturgy of the pieces. The initially calm and economical sound designs were increasingly expanded to loud and condensed textures in later publications. Some of his pieces can be assigned to Drone Doom , other influences come from Concrete Music , Heavy Metal and Black Metal .

Collaborations

There were collaborations with Jim O'Rourke ( Gastr del Sol ) and Ken Vandermark . Also with Taku Sugimoto , Axel Dörner , Martin Tétreault and Ralf Wehowsky , with Phill Niblock , Tony Conrad , MIMEO , Mats Gustafsson , John Butcher and Thomas Ankersmit. In the course of a collaboration with the artist collective Simparch , he composed the piece Spec , which was performed at Documenta11 in Kassel and at the Renaissance Society of America in Chicago.
