South Holland is a location in Cook County , Illinois , United States and serves as the seat of Thornton Township . According to the 2010 census, the population was 22,030.

history

The area around what is now South Holland was first settled by immigrants from South Holland around 1846. When it was officially founded in 1894, around 1000 people lived in the village. The agricultural town specialized in growing vegetables, especially onions were grown. In the 1940s this earned the place the nickname of the world capital of onion sets . The place was built on lower ground near the Calumet River and was originally called de laage Prairie ( the deep prairie ) to distinguish it from other Dutch settlements in the area.

In October 2007, Forbes.com was named the most liveable suburb in the greater Chicago area.

South Holland is bordered by Harvey and Phoenix to the west, Dolton to the north, Thornton to the south, and Calumet City and Lansing to the east .

According to the 2010 census, the total area of ​​the place was 18.9 square kilometers, of which 99.86% land and 0.27% water.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, 22,147 people lived in 7,663 households and 6,007 families. The population density was 1174.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 7825 residential units with an average building density of 415.0 houses per square kilometer.

In 7,663 households, children under the age of 18 lived in 33.3% of cases, 61.8% lived together as married couples, 12.9% had a female householder and 21.6% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.24.

25.6% of the population was under the age of 18 years, 7.0% were between 18 and 24 years old, 25.5% between 25 and 44 years, 24.3% between 45 and 64 years and 17.7% were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 89.2 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18 there were 88.6 men.

The median income for a household was USD 60,246 and the median income for a family was USD 67,451. 2.8% of families and 4.6% of the population are below the poverty line , including 4.9% of those aged under 18 and age 4 , 2% of people who were 65 years of age or older.
