Orland Park is a village in Cook County and to a lesser extent in Will County in the northeast of the US -amerikanischen State of Illinois and part of the Chicago metropolitan area . In 2000, Orland Park had 51,077 residents; by the 2009 estimate, the population had risen to 55,236.

In 2006, Orland Park was ranked 45th on Money magazine's list of the Best Places to Live in the United States.

Geography and traffic

Orland Park is located at 41 ° 36'42 "north latitude and 87 ° 51'15" west longitude and extends over 50.25 km², which is spread over 49.47 km² of land and 0.78 km² of water. The Will County portion of Orland Park is mostly commercial, while Cook County is the most residential area.

In the northwest, Orland Park is bounded by the Orland Grove Forest Preserve , a wooded nature park in the middle of which is the McGinnis Slough .

US Highway 45 runs through the town in a north-south direction.

With three stations on the SouthWest Service (SWS), Orland Park is connected to the METRA rapid transit system , which is an important part of public transport in the greater Chicago area.

The Chicago-Midway Airport is located 31.6 km northeast of Orland Park, the larger O'Hare International Airport is located 50.2 kilometers north.

Orland Park is 27 miles southwest of Chicago . Other major towns in the area include Tinley Park (7.5 miles southeast), Joliet (17.5 miles southwest), Bolingbrook (29.2 km west-northwest) and Oak Lawn (16.1 km northeast).

Orland Park is within daily reach of most colleges and universities in the Chicago area. There are also a number of higher education institutions in Orland Park. Long-established Chicago-based St. Xavier University has a branch in Orland Park, as does the ITT Technical Institute . The Robert Morris University is present also in Orland Park.

Approximately 60 percent of Orland Park households have at least one person with a bachelor's degree or higher education.

In the official census in 2000 , a population of 51,077 was determined. These were distributed over 18,675 households in 14,361 families. The population density was 1,032.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 19,082 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 385.7 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 93.5 percent white , 0.7 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American , 3.5 percent Asian, and 1.0 percent other. 1.1 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 3.7 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

26.5 percent of the residents of Orland Park were Irish , 19.5 percent German , 18.5 percent Polish, 18.5 percent Italian, and 5.1 percent English.

24.4 percent were under 18 years of age, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 27.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 41 years. Statistically, there were 91.7 men for every 100 women, 87.7 among those over 18.

The median income per household was 67,574  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 77,507 USD. The median income for men was $ 57,275 and that for women was $ 34,763. The per capita income was $ 30,467. Around 2.1 percent of families and 3.1 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
