Romeoville is a place in Will County in the northeast of the American state of Illinois . Romeoville originated on the Illinois and Michigan Canal , about 25 miles southeast of central Chicago . Today the fast-growing place is part of the Chicago metropolitan area . As of 2000, Romeoville had a population of around 21,000; in 2010 the population was estimated at just under 40,000.

history

Romeoville was built in 1835 as a port on the newly built Illinois and Michigan Canal , which made the Des Plaines River navigable there. The nearby town of Rairdon's Subdivision was renamed Romeo ; probably complementary to Juliet to the south . When Juliet was renamed Joliet in 1845, Romeo also changed the name: to Romeoville. Mainly coal and oil were transported on the canal. There is a large oil refinery in Romeoville , part of Globe Oil in the 1930s, later Union Oil and now Citgo . Seventeen people were killed in an explosion at the refinery in 1984.

Lewis University , a private university founded in Romeoville in 1932, has almost 7,000 students and is supported by the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago . Romeoville's regional airport, Lewis University Airport ( IATA code LOT) is named after the university.

Romeoville is about 30 miles from Chicago. Due to this proximity, it has an excellent infrastructure.

The nearest international airport is O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.
