Channahon is a village in the state of Illinois in the United States . The place belongs to the metropolitan area of ​​Chicago and is mostly in Will County , the western part of Channahon is part of Grundy County . At the last census in 2010 , Channahon had 12,560 residents.

Channahon is located in the extreme southwest of the Chicago metropolitan area, around 15 kilometers southwest of Joliet . Downtown Chicago is approximately 70 kilometers from Channahon. Neighboring towns are Minooka and Shorewood to the north and Morris to the west.

Channahon is located at the confluence of the Des Plaines River and the Kankakee River to the Illinois River . The DuPage River also flows through the city itself . There are several smaller lakes in the urban area.

history

Originally Native Americans from the Potawatomi tribe lived in the area around Channahon until European settlers first came to the region in 1832. The name of Channahon comes from the Potawatomi language and means "place where the waters meet", the name refers to the location of the city at the confluence of the three rivers Des Plaines, DuPage and Kankakee Rivers. Construction of a canal began in 1836, and one of the locks was located near Channahon.

Shortly after the construction of the waterway, Myrvin Benjamin built a small village near the lock, which he initially named DuPage after its location on the DuPage River . In 1840 the settlement was renamed Snifton . In 1962, the place under the present name was Channahon Village as incorporated in the following years began a strong growth of Channahon. Hispanics and Latinos made up 8.2% of the total population. Married couples lived in 73.6% of households, 7.0% of households were made up of single women and 3.7% of single men. 47.4% of households had children under the age of 18 living with them and 16.5% of households had seniors over 65 years of age.

The median age in Channahon in 2010 was 35.9 years. 31.3% of the residents were younger than 18 years, 6.5% were between 18 and 24, 27.9% between 25 and 44, 27.0% between 45 and 65 and 7.3% of the residents were older than 65 Years. 50.1% of the population were male and 49.9% female.

Channahon is located at the intersection of Interstate Highways 55 and 80 and has two interchanges on Interstate 55 and another out-of-town interchange on Interstate 80.Because of its location on Interstate 55 at this point, Channahon is also on historic Route 66 . The US Highway 6 runs in east-west direction directly through the center of Channahon.
