The Kankakee River is the left headwaters of the Illinois River in the US states of Indiana and Illinois . It has a length of 214 km and drains an area of 13,340 km². The mean discharge is 138 m³ / s.

The Kankakee River rises 15 km west-southwest of South Bend in northern Indiana. It flows for the first 100 kilometers in a west-southwest direction. He picks up the Yellow River from the left. He later crossed the Illinois border and passed the village of Momence . The Iroquois River , the most important tributary of the Kankakee River, flows into the river on the left. The Kanakee River then turns to the northwest. It flows past the towns of Kankakee and Wilmington . Eventually it meets the Des Plaines River , with which it forms the Illinois River.
nature and environment
Almost 18 kilometers of the river on the lower reaches between Kankakee and Wilmington lie in the Kankakee River State Park .
The Kankakee River is popular for fishing and canoeing. The main types of fish that are caught in the river are: black bass , glass eye bass , ictalurus punctatus ( channel catfish ), stone bass and pike .
