The Illinois River is one of the main tributaries of the Mississippi River , approximately 440 km long and drains an area of 72,701 square kilometers.
The river runs entirely within the US state of Illinois . It was of great importance for the Indians and for French traders of the 17th and 18th centuries as a connection between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi. It has been part of the Illinois Waterway since the 19th century .
course
The Illinois is formed by the confluence of the Kankakee River and Des Plaines River in the eastern part of Grundy County , about 10 miles southwest of Joliet . It flows through the central part of Illinois and flows into the Mississippi River in Jersey County near Grafton (just under 60 km northwest of St. Louis ).
