The Vermilion River is a left tributary of the Illinois River in the US state of Illinois . The river is 120 km long and drains an area of ​​3420 km².

The Vermilion River is formed at the confluence of the South Fork and North Fork Vermilion Rivers in Livingston County . It flows in a predominantly northeast direction into LaSalle County . It flows through the small towns of Pontiac and Streator . In the village of Oglesby , across from the city of LaSalle , the Vermilion River flows into the Illinois River. The Matthiessen State Park and the Margery C. Carlson Nature Preserve are near the estuary .
