This settlement was called VanHorne Point . In 1852 this settlement became part of the newly founded Tracey Township , the township was named after an employee of the Rock Island Railroad . Shortly afterwards the place was renamed New Lenox by the railroad official John Van Duser, the name is derived from the name of the city of Lenox in the state of New York , Van Duser's hometown.

In 1853 the first church was built in New Lenox. This church, known as Bethel Church , was located on the city boundary between New Lenox and Frankfort and served both parishes for services. In the 1870s, New Lenox had three shops, three blacksmiths , a grain store, and a hotel.
