history
Naperville was founded in July 1831 by Joseph Naper . The first settlement was simply called Naper's Settlement , or (Joseph) Naper's settlement . A year later, over 100 settlers had reached Naper's Settlement. These settlers were temporarily evacuated to Fort Dearborn , the nucleus of Chicago, to protect against a possible impending attack by the Sauk . A fort of their own , Fort Payne, was built at Naper's Settlement, the settlers returned, the feared attack by the Sauk never took place. A reconstruction of Fort Payne can be seen in the Naper Settlement open-air museum . This museum was established by the Naperville Heritage Society in the 1970s to preserve some of the oldest buildings in the community.
From 1839 to 1868, Naper's Settlement was the administrative seat of DuPage County. In 1857 Naper's Settlement was officially registered as the Village of Naperville . At the time, Naperville had a population of around 2,000. In 1890 Naperville was raised to the status of a city and officially registered as the City of Naperville .
Mainly rural since its inception, Naperville experienced a population explosion beginning in the 1960s, but intensified in the 1980s and 1990s. This development was promoted in particular by the construction of Interstate I-88, the so-called East-West Tollway, recently renamed the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway, and the construction of Interstate I-355, the so-called North-South Tollway. In the course of the improved transport connections, industrial settlements, service companies, jobs and prosperity came to the western suburbs of Chicago. In the past two decades, Naperville's population has almost quadrupled.
Town twinning
With the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, a group of Naperville citizens began exploring options for twinning with a city in one of the new democracies in Eastern Europe. Naperville City Council supported the idea. On November 17, 1993 the town twinning with Nitra in Slovakia was formally put into effect. Numerous cultural, social, political and business projects promote international understanding and cooperation.
