Lombard , called The Lilac Village (German; the lilac-colored community ), is a suburb of Chicago in DuPage County , Illinois , United States . According to an estimate by the United States Census Bureau in 2004, the town had a population of 42,975.
history
The land of today's Lombard, which originally belonged to the territory of the Potawatomi Indians, was first settled by European immigrants around 1830. The brothers Ralph and Morgan Babcock settled in a grove near the DuPage River . Lombard developed around this nucleus to the east and Glen Elly to the west. As early as 1837 the place was connected to Chicago by a stagecoach line. Other settlers like Sheldon and Harrier Peck came to the area around 1837. The Peck family's home also served as the area's first school and was restored by the Lombard Historical Society and added to the National Park Service Network of Freedom in 2011.
The rail link in 1848 gave local farmers access to Chicago markets and commercial real estate was built around the station. Lombard was officially founded in 1869, named after the Chicago banker and builder Josiah Lombard.

According to the 2010 census, the town had a total area of 27.1 square kilometers, of which 98.06% was land and 1.91% was water.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 42,322 residents lived in 16,487 households and 10,716 families.
The population density was 1686.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 17,019 residential units with an average building density of 678.1 houses per square kilometer.
In the 16,487 households, there were children under the age of 18 in 29.8% of cases; 53.9% were married couples living together, 7.9% a female householder, and 35.0% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.3% had people living there who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 people and the average family size was 3.13 people.
23.0% of the population was under 18 years old, 7.9% was 18 to 24 years old, 33.4% between 25 and 44 years old, 21.2% between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.5% was 65 Years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 94.3 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18 there were 91.4 men.
The median income for a local household was $ 60,015 per year and the median income for a family was $ 69,686 per year. The per capita income was $ 27,667 per year. Over 2.0% of families and 3.8% of the population were below the poverty line , including 3.6% of those under eighteen and 4.0% of those 65 years of age or older.
