METRA is a mass transit system in the Chicago area . With eleven lines and over 200 stations, the METRA system forms the backbone of traffic flows from the suburbs ( commuter communities ) in the greater Chicago area to the city center and back. The Chicago 'L' , which runs almost exclusively in the city center, is used for further development. The official name of METRA is Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corporation .

history

The current system was created with the RTA Amendatory Act in 1983. This unified the local transport systems, but at the same time divided them into three groups according to the system used. In addition to the Chicago Transit Authority , operator of the Chicago 'L' and the bus company PACE , the Regional Transportation Authority (Illinois) , the current operator of the METRA system, was created.

Metra operates all lines except the BNSF line and the Union Pacific lines with its own vehicles. These are operated by the BNSF Railway or Union Pacific Railroad on behalf of Metra. This fact is indicated on the affected wagons with a corresponding logo of these railway companies.
