The NCTD Sprinter is a diesel-mechanical local transport multiple unit from the Desiro Classic vehicle concept developed by Siemens Transportation Systems (today: Siemens Mobility ) . The operator is the North County Transit District (NCTD). North County stands for the northern part of San Diego County in California , USA .
history
The manufacturer of the multiple units is the company Siemens Transportation Systems , in whose plant in Krefeld - Uerdingen the production took place. The first three trains on board the ship MV Medea left Germany on July 14, 2006 from Bremerhaven . The route led across the Atlantic, through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific to Port Hueneme in California. The truck was then transported to Escondido , where the multiple units were assembled by the operator.
Technically, the Sprinter units are very similar to the trains of the DB version of the 642 series . The main differences are the omission of the 1st carriage class and the on-board toilet as well as the use of a more powerful air conditioning system .
Since 2009, takes place maintenance of the vehicles by a consortium of Veolia Transport and Bombardier Transportation .
In March 2013, unusually high signs of wear were found on the brakes of a multiple unit. As a result, operations were initially carried out at reduced speed and shortly thereafter interrupted for two months, during which all trains were checked and defective parts were replaced. During this time, a replacement bus service was set up. Allegedly, problems with the brakes of the trains were known more than a year in advance, but were not communicated to the responsible authorities.
route
In 1992, North County Transit District acquired an existing freight line between Oceanside and Escondido, parallel to Highway 78, from the Santa Fe Railway . The total cost for track and vehicles amounted to 477.6 million US dollars . On March 9, 2008, the Sprinter line was opened at the scheduled 30-minute intervals. The route is 22 miles (35 km) long and has 15 stops. This shortens the distance previously traveled by bus by around 20 minutes. The Sprinter transports around 2.4 million passengers each year.
