The Greek state railway OSE called the OSE series 660 a two-part local transport multiple unit from the Desiro Classic vehicle concept with a diesel-mechanical drive developed by Siemens Transportation Systems (today: Rail Systems ) . The eight units belong to the Greek ship and rail manufacturer Hellenic Shipyards and were temporarily used on the Athens - Thessaloniki route. They now run on the Hungarian State Railways .
history
The Greek traffic planning for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens provided for the use of five-part electric railcars of the OSE class 460 on the route between Athens and Thessaloniki, which were to be manufactured by Hellenic Shipyards . But when it became clear that the trains were not operational in time and that the line was not fully electrified, Hellenic Shipyards ordered eight two-part Desiro Classic diesel multiple units as a temporary replacement. The trains, which are technically similar to the DB class 642, were manufactured in the Siemens factory in Krefeld-Uerdingen ; Test drives took place on the routes of the Rurtalbahn near Düren .
When the planned trains could be used, the eight railcars were no longer used, so that in 2005 the Greek State Railways could return the vehicles to Hellenic Shipyards. Hellenic Shipyards then lent units of the 660 series to the private railway company Proastiakos , which served services between Piraeus and Corinth . In 2009, all eight vehicles were transferred to Hungary , where, after modifications and adjustments to the local train control requirements, they are now used north of Lake Balaton in red .
