The British Class 444 vehicles are five-part electric multiple units (EMU). They belong to the Desiro product family from Siemens Mobility (formerly Siemens Transportation Systems, since 10/2011 Siemens Rail Systems).
Manufacturer and operator
In 2001, Siemens Transportation Systems received an order for 45 five-part multiple units, which were manufactured in the Vienna plant. The customer acceptance took place in the test center in Wegberg -Wildenrath. The first handover to the end customer, the British railway company South West Trains (SWT), was on May 24, 2004 in London's Waterloo station . The contract includes maintenance over 25 years at the purpose-built depot in Northam, Southampton .

Class 444 is operated on the routes from London-Waterloo to Portsmouth , Southampton , Bournemouth and Weymouth .
Awards
The specialist magazine Modern Railways has awarded Class 444 the "Golden Spanner 2010" as Great Britain's most reliable vehicle. Within twelve months, the vehicles operated by SWT have set a new reliability record with around 89,000 kilometers without malfunction.
