The AM 08 series of the Belgian State Railways (NMBS / SNCB) is a type of single-car multiple unit that belongs to the modular Desiro ML product family from Siemens Mobility (formerly Siemens Transportation Systems). 305 three-part, electric multiple units have been in production since the end of 2009. The first vehicles were put into service in December 2011.

vehicle

2nd class of the Desiro ML

The vehicles have low-floor entrances at a height of 80 cm above the top edge of the rails with a width of 1.3 meters, most of the seats are accessible without steps. There are barrier-free entrances and car passages as well as a handicapped accessible toilet. The vehicles are fully air-conditioned. An optical and acoustic passenger information system informs the passengers. Conventional bogies of the type SF6500 from the Siemens factory in Graz should contribute to cost-effective maintenance. Among other things, they have tried-and-tested swing arm guides, coil springs and secondary air suspension, making them a direct further development of the SF6000 bogies used in the Sprinter Lighttrain . Narrow track radii of up to 80 meters can be driven on.

The multiple units will be equipped with the Trainguard 100 train protection system ( ETCS Level 1 ) as well as equipment from the Belgian TBL1 + system that is connected to Trainguard devices . You can switch between the two systems without interrupting your journey.

The multiple units can be driven in multiple units.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer is Siemens Mobility , a division of Siemens AG . Production has been taking place in its factory in Krefeld-Uerdingen since 2009 . Commissioning and customer acceptance took place in the Wegberg-Wildenrath test center . The Belgian plant of Bombardier Transportation in Bruges is involved in the production , where the final construction is taking place for 155 train compositions.

Operator and routes

On May 15, 2008, the Belgian State Railways ordered a total of 305 three-part Desiro MLs from Siemens for 1.4 billion euros. Deliveries are planned for the years 2011 to 2016. Of the 305 vehicles, 95 are planned for the S-Bahn network in Brussels .

The multi-voltage vehicles have been used since 2012 on routes in the Ardennes that are electrified with 25 kV AC voltage , such as Libramont – Athus , and have replaced the 41 series there. Since the 2013 timetable year, the vehicles have been running numerous services in the greater Brussels area and on the Antwerp  - Brussels - Charleroi axis , including intercity trains , along with other routes .

In the course of the second half of 2012, operations began on the HSL 4 high-speed line between Antwerpen-Centraal and Noorderkempen train station in Brecht , where the vehicles need their ETCS equipment. After 61 trains had been delivered, the NMBS stopped the acceptance of further trains in early 2013 due to technical deficiencies, which led the Belgian press to compare it with the debacle about the Fyra V250 trains . According to Siemens, after installing a software update that corrects errors, delivery of the trains continued in March 2013. In January 2015, claims by the NMBS / SNCB for compensation of 60 million euros became known. It is not known whether this request was granted. The trains are affected by a technical problem every 8,000 kilometers on average. This negative representation has since been revised by the Belgian Minister of Transport, François Bellot , who gives a value of 100,000 kilometers.
