The AnsaldoBreda V250 is an electric high-speed train from the Italian manufacturer AnsaldoBreda , which operated under the brand name Fyra on the Dutch-Belgian high-speed line Schiphol – Antwerp from the end of 2012 to the beginning of 2013 . After numerous deficiencies, its scheduled use was stopped on January 18, 2013 by a driving ban by the Belgian supervisory authority and was not resumed. There was also no further use on Dutch routes. The order for further trains was canceled and the existing trains were returned to the manufacturer. The former Fyra trains have been in use at Trenitalia as ETR 700s since 2019 .

history

The operating company High Speed Alliance , HSA for short , a joint venture between Nederlandse Spoorwegen ( NS ) and the airline KLM , ordered 16 sets (other source: 12) of the V250 initially marketed as Albatros , the Belgian state railway SNCB three. In addition, an option for 14 more trains was agreed. It was originally planned to start operations on April 1, 2007.

In early 2006, delivery was scheduled for February 2008. In spring 2008, test drives were started on the Velim railway test ring . The first train was delivered to the Netherlands at the end of April 2009. In mid-May 2009, after the test runs in Velim, the second train was also transferred to Amsterdam.

On July 7th, 2009 a train and the name Fyra were presented to the public. Then test drives began on HSL Zuid and HSL 4 . After it became foreseeable that the trains would not be available in time for the opening of HSL Zuid, HSA decided to start traffic on the line in autumn 2009 with conventional, locomotive-hauled trains. At that time, the operators assumed that the first trains would be ready for use in the course of 2010. After further delays, regular passenger use gradually began on July 29, 2012. From September until the timetable change in December 2012, depending on the availability of the train sets, assignments in passenger operations between Amsterdam and Rotterdam followed, in addition to the existing Fyra offer with locomotive-hauled trains between Amsterdam and Breda.

The scheduled operation finally started on December 9, 2012 with ten connections a day. The V250 ran on the Schiphol – Antwerp high-speed line , connecting Amsterdam with Schiphol Airport , Rotterdam and Brussels . The previously existing IC connection ( Beneluxtrein ) between the two endpoints with a stop in The Hague was discontinued on this date. In addition, connections were to be established from Rotterdam to The Hague and from Breda to Amsterdam and Antwerp.

On January 18, 2013, the Belgian supervisory authority Dienst Veiligheid en Interoperabiliteit der Spoorwegen withdrew the license for the V250 for commercial operation with passengers until the operator could again prove the reliability of the fleet. Covers from the underfloor area of the vehicles were found along the route, and ice debris damaged several multiple units days earlier. In June 2013 the Dutch supervisory authority Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport issued a provisional driving ban, which also includes test drives. The Belgian railways announced on May 31, 2013 that it was canceling its order for three vehicles because the vehicles were too deficient in terms of reliability and safety. The problems have not been satisfactorily resolved within the three-month ultimatum since the trains were taken out of service in mid-January 2013. Afterwards, on June 3, 2013, NS Hispeed announced that they would no longer use the vehicles. The lessor of the sixteen Dutch vehicles, NS Financial Services , stated in court in June 2013 that the vehicles would still be accepted and rented to other transport companies as soon as they were faultless. On August 30, 2013, NS announced that the purchase agreement had been terminated.

On March 17th, 2014, NS, AnsaldoBreda and their parent company Finmeccanica (FNM) announced a solution to their dispute over the sixteen V250 trains operated by NS Financial Services. The companies agreed that all V250 trains would go back to AnsaldoBreda in Italy, with NS being reimbursed 125 million euros. Should AnsaldoBreda be able to sell the trains to other customers, NS would receive further payments. With the Belgian railways, whose three trains had not been delivered, the manufacturer agreed in May 2014 to terminate the purchase agreement and to pay the railroad company € 2.5 million in compensation.

ETR 700 004 in Milano-Centrale (August 2019)

The Italian Trenitalia bought 17 of 19 vehicles in 2017. The other two are used as spare parts dispensers. These trains will be classified as ETR 700 and will be added to the Frecciargento rolling stock inventory in the course of 2019 . Trenitalia has been using the first ETR 700 in commercial traffic since June 9, 2019.

technology

The trains designed by Pininfarina could run under three different traction current systems, with 25 kV 50 Hz alternating voltage and 3 or 1.5 kV direct voltage . In addition to the ETCS Level 2 train protection system used on HSL-Zuid , the trains were also equipped with the Dutch ATB and the Belgian TBL. You should be traveling at a top speed of 250 km / h. The eight intermediate cars offered a total of 546 seats, 127 of them in first class. There were also sockets at the places.
