Location and economy
Deurne is located in the east of the province, between Helmond, eight kilometers to the west . Venlo is about 30 km south-east of Deurne. The city is connected by a railway with Eindhoven and Venlo. A junction with the A67 is located a few kilometers away . Another road leads north-east to Venray .
Deurne lives mainly from trade and small businesses, industry (a plant of the Philips group), tourism and agriculture.
history
The place Deurne was mentioned for the first time in 721 in an episcopal deed of donation. Already around 800 BC BC people lived here, as the discovery of an urn field testifies. In 1910 a gilded helmet of a Roman was found during the work to reclaim the raised bog in the municipality (now in the Leiden Museum for Antiquity { Rijksmuseum van Oudheden }). In the Middle Ages Deurne had a St. Willibrord consecrated church . This was forcibly "reformed" after the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, when Deurne became part of the Protestant Republic of the Netherlands. The Catholics went to Mass in Venray , which, like large parts of the province of Limburg, did not become Dutch until 1815. During the reign of Napoleon, the Catholics got their church back in 1799.
In 1853 a businessman by the name of Van der Griendt founded Maatschappij Helenaveen , which had large parts of the raised bog "De Peel" buried: the peat was a good fuel and after the meter-thick layer of bog was removed, usable arable land remained. The village of Helenaveen developed there, with a freight station on the Eindhoven - Helmond - Venlo railway line opened in 1866, which was important until the Second World War . At the beginning of the 20th century, there was also a significant textile industry in Deurne , and the Philips Group built a light bulb factory in Deurne . In the meantime the peat extraction had been stopped due to inefficiency (in South Limburg there were now the hard coal mines).
The Second World War was catastrophic for the community. First of all, when the German troops marched in on May 10 and 11, 1940, there was heavy fighting here. In autumn 1944, Deurnes Castle and the village of Neerkant were heavily devastated by the Allies' attempt to conquer the area between Eindhoven / Herzogenbusch and the Maas, which was still occupied by the Germans , after the partially unsuccessful Operation Market Garden . The large Liberty Park War Museum in neighboring Overloon gives a good picture of these battles. After 1950, with government subsidies in The Hague, industrial parks were built along the railroad, which greatly improved economic development.
Cultural
Deurne was the residence of several well-known artists in the region:
- Hendrik Wiegersma, painter, a friend of Ossip Zadkine
- his sons Friso Wiegersma, text writer for well-known Dutch small artists such as Wim Sonneveld , and Pieter Wiegersma (1920–2009)
- Antoon Coolen, writer (1897–1961)
- Toon Kortooms, writer (1916-1999).
Trivia
Toon Kortooms wrote popular, humorous novels about the area and village life, including “Beekman en Beekman” and “Help, de dokter verzuipt”, which was made into a film.
Attractions
- The high moor landscape of De Peel , east of Deurne. Part of it is a 13 km² national park (Nationaal Park De Groote Peel ), which can be visited by the visitor center “Mijl op zeven”. "De Peel" is separated from Deurne himself by the "Peelrandbreuk". This is a small fault or break in the earth's crust, so where earthquakes are possible. But there are hardly ever any stronger quakes than about three on the Richter scale .
- The Hendrik Wiegersma House (De Wieger). Museum for paintings from the period 1915–1940. Temporary exhibitions of modern art.
- Some old windmills and 19th century farmhouses .
- Small and large castle in the “Haageind” (14th century).
