Johan Roijakkers

Johannes Cornelius Maria Josef (called Johan) Roijakkers (born September 15, 1980 in Deurne ) is a Dutch basketball coach . He has been the head coach at the BG Göttingen since 2012 .

Career

During his playing career, Roijakkers played for Deurne Pioneers and PSV / Almonte Eindhoven in his home country. With Basketball Bree he played in the first Belgian league and in the European Cup.

His coaching career began in 2002 in the youth department of Bree, for the 2003/04 season he was assistant coach of the club's men's team in the first Belgian division and was promoted to interim coaching in April 2004 at the age of 23. He returned to the post of assistant the following season and continued to work as a responsible coach in the club's youth department. From 2006 he was also active as a scout for the British national team. Roijakker's brother Thomas also became a basketball coach.

2007 Roijakkers moved from Bree to league competitor Dexia Mons-Hainaut , where he was hired as an assistant coach. In 2009 he also worked as assistant coach for the Belgian U20 national team and in 2010 in the same position for the Dutch U15 team.

In 2010 he returned to Bree as head of the youth department before he went to America: During the 2010/11 season he was an assistant coach on the staff of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA Development League and reached the final with the team.

In January 2011 Roijakkers took over the post of head coach of the Dutch U18 national team, for the 2011/12 season he took over the same position at the Slovak first division club BC Prievidza. He led the club to win the championship title in 2012 and was named coach of the year in the Slovak league by the internet service eurobasket.com .

He left Prievidza after the championship and was hired as head coach by the BG Göttingen in June 2012 . In his second year with the Lower Saxony club, the "Veilchen" won the championship in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA under the leadership of the Dutchman and rose to the basketball Bundesliga . In the following years he kept the Lower Saxony in the top German league despite comparatively little economic resources. In the 2019/20 season he reached the quarter-finals of the Bundesliga season-end tournament with Göttingen, which was held because of the spread of COVID-19 .

At the beginning of July 2020, Roijakkers moved to Brose Bamberg together with his coaching and support staff . He received a three-year contract.
