) is a municipality in theLocation and economy
Vught is located on the Dommel River , about 3.5 km south of the provincial capital 's-Hertogenbosch . In Vught the railway line divides from Herzogenbusch to Tilburg in a south -westerly direction and Eindhoven in a south-south-east direction. Vught has a small train station here; a stop on the line to Tilburg is "in study". The A2 Herzogenbusch – Eindhoven motorway also runs through Vught (with the A65 / N65 junction towards Tilburg).
Vught is a suburb of Herzogenbusch. Over half of the working population works in the northern neighboring city. There are several nursing homes in Vught, including a psychiatric hospital. The Herzogenbusch city prison is also in Vught.
history
The name Vught goes back to the moisture of the area in the former wetlands of the Dommel ( vught = "moist"). Very little is known about the history of Vught before the 19th century, apart from a customs law granted to the place in 1028 .
In 1844 eight " lunettes ", crescent-shaped fortifications were built in Vught . They belonged to the fortress of Herzogenbusch. Vught became an important location for the army, u. a. the engineer troops ; There are still several former barracks in the village.
To the south of the village, sand was extracted from around 1890 by a steam engine-controlled system. Popularly this machine was called “de ijzeren man” (the iron man). The lake created by sand extraction, now a recreational area with a beach, was given the same name.
In January 1943, the Herzogenbusch concentration camp was established in Vught by the German occupation forces . This was partly set up after Indonesia's independence in 1949 as a place of residence for Moluccan immigrants (locals and Dutch loyal to Holland, including many professional soldiers). Since many of these Moluccans, even after the evacuation to the Netherlands, claimed to be the KNIL ( Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger , German: Royal Dutch-Indian Army ), they refused to consider themselves civilians and stayed in the barracks , including those of the former concentration camp. In 1970 they then had to move into "normal" apartments. Many Dutch people of Moluccan origin still live in Vught.
