Steenbergen ( Noord-Brabant . Since January 1, 1997, the community has existed in its current form.
) is a municipality in the Dutch province ofLocation and economy
Steenbergen is located in the northwest of the province of Noord-Brabant, where it borders on Zeeland and Zuid-Holland . The landscape is very similar to that of the neighboring provinces: polders and a mudflat landscape outside the dikes. The northern border of the municipality runs through the Volkerak , part of Grevelingen . The small river Dintel (at the mouth of which there is an industrial port in Volkerak) forms the eastern border with Moerdijk .
Main sources of income are agriculture (cattle breeding; arable farming, including the cultivation of sugar beets ) as well as industry (including a large sugar factory ).
The N259 runs through the municipality, which at Dinteloord merges into the A29 motorway towards Dordrecht and Rotterdam . Rail travelers are dependent on the bus from the train stations in Roosendaal or Bergen op Zoom .

history
Steenbergen used to be a fortress town. To commemorate this fact there is a monument in front of the town hall. In addition, the shape of the "Crooked Way" is reminiscent of the time as a fortress city. The place received city rights in 1272 and was at times an important port city in the 14th century . In the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) Steenbergen was expanded into a fortress . Floods and wars have resulted in the fact that hardly any buildings that were built before around 1880 have been preserved in the old town.
Nieuw-Vossemeer (mentioned for the first time in 1410) and Dinteloord were created through dikes in the 15th to 17th centuries. Nieuw-Vossemeer in particular suffered badly from the flood disaster of February 1, 1953.
