Woensdrecht ( listen ? / I ) is a place and a municipality in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant . The community has 21,845 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2019, source: CBS ) and has an area of ​​91.99 km². Audio file / audio sample

Before the new community of Woensdrecht was established on January 1, 1997, there was a smaller community of the same name. The area of ​​this municipality was 33.25 km². The three sub-communities that were added at that time are Ossendrecht , Huijbergen and Putte.

The name Woensdrecht goes back to the main god Wodan from Germanic mythology . This gives the place name a similar etymology to Woensel (Wodanswald) near Eindhoven .

There is an airport ( IATA code : WOE) in the municipality , which also has a military section under the name Woensdrecht Military Airfield, operated by the Dutch Air Force . Mainly, however, he is known for an aircraft storage and recycling company. Similar operations are located at Ahlhorn Airport (Germany) and the Mojave Air & Space Port in the Mojave Desert (USA).
