history

There were already numerous small trading and farming settlements here on the western bank of the Mosa (Maas) in Roman times . In the Middle Ages , the area of today's municipality Boxmeer was a bone of contention in the border area between the duchies of Brabant and Geldern . The lord (at that time still count) von Geldern granted a certain Jan Boc van Mere sovereign rights to this area in the 13th century ; the name Boc's Meer became Boxmeer. When Noord-Brabant became part of the Republic of the United Netherlands in 1648 , Boxmeer remained outside the new state. As a result, Boxmeer was not forced to convert to Protestantism like its western neighbors . Catholics from all over Noord-Brabant went to Boxmeer on Sundays and public holidays to hear mass there. In addition, a miracle with the holy blood is said to have occurred in Boxmeer at the beginning of the 15th century . This made it a place of pilgrimage . During the French period (1795-1815) Boxmeer was incorporated into the province of Noord-Brabant. The area is separated from the western neighboring country by the extensive, then inaccessible De Peel moorland . Since the Nijmegen - Venlo railway was also built, Boxmeer turned to Nijmegen. In the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century , De Peel was partially reclaimed and the extraction of peat brought a little more work opportunities.

The Second World War had disastrous consequences for the municipality of Boxmeer. In October 1944 there was a major tank battle as part of Operation Market Garden . The Allies finally won this " Battle of Overloon " after bloody fighting: the last bridgehead west of the Meuse had been recaptured by Nazi Germany. But Overloon, Boxmeer and other places in this area had to be rebuilt in whole or in large part after the end of the war. The War and Resistance Museum ( Nationaal Oorlogs- en verzetsmuseum ) was established in Overloon in 1946 .
