  • The federal motorway 57 (abbreviation: BAB 57 ) - short form: Autobahn 57 (abbreviation: A 57 ) - runs from the Dutch border near Goch in continuation of the A77 (NL) parallel to the Rhine over the left Lower Rhine , Krefeld and Neuss to Cologne . It is part of the European route 31 , which leads from Rotterdam to Hockenheim .

    In view of its great importance for the economy and traffic, the A 57 can be called the Trans-Niederrhein- Magistrale .

    Planning history and construction

    The federal highway 57 originated with the bypass of Neuss, which was initially built as federal highway 9a. In 1954, the section between today's Holzbüttgen junction (formerly Bundesstrasse 7 ) and the Neuss-West motorway junction (formerly Bundesstrasse 1 ) was brought under traffic in two lanes. In the first half of the 1960s, the section between Neuss-West and Neuss-Hafen followed as a four-lane federal road and the Neuss- Grimlinghausen bypass on the B 9 . In addition, the Neuss-Norf to Cologne-Longerich route following the Grimlinghausen bypass was tackled as a replacement federal road 9 and completed in 1966. Thereafter, the construction as the federal motorway Krefeld - Cologne - Ludwigshafen, which was initially called "Rheinlinie" or "links Rheinische Autobahn" and at the beginning of the 1970s the internal designation "Autobahn 14" was promoted: the Neuss bypass was extensively expanded until 1970 expanded. Also in 1970 the section Meerbusch-Osterath - Kreuz Kaarst - Holzbüttgen was released, which connected to the Neuss bypass to the north. The Cologne-Longerich - Cologne-Parkring route was completed as part of the "Autobahn 11" Lübeck - Hamburg - Bremen - Münster - Dortmund - Cologne in the same year. To the east of Krefeld, a route between Bockum and Uerdingen was kept clear at an early stage . A replacement federal highway 57 was planned north of the city at the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, which would lead to Rheinberg and where it would merge with the existing B 57 road. In the mid-1960s, the extension to the Netherlands at Goch was considered, the line essentially determined in 1972.

    In the 1960s it was also planned to run the A 57 to the Cologne-East motorway junction (north bypass) or as the A 555 to the Cologne-south (west bypass) junction ( see also: Kölner Stadtautobahn ).

    In the requirements plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from June 30, 1971, the Krefeld-Gartenstadt - Meerbusch-Osterath line was included as an ongoing project (A 14), the Krefeld-Gartenstadt - Goch line (A 14) in urgency level I. In 1972, further sections between Krefeld-Gartenstadt and Moers were under construction or shortly before completion.

    With the restructuring of the network of federal motorways, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the A 14 was given the new name "Federal Motorway 57".

    The requirement plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976 contained the section between the AS Kleve and the Moers junction as an ongoing project. Between the federal border and the Kleve junction, the A 57 was only classified as a single lane in urgency level Ib, the second lane only as a possible additional requirement.

    The second law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980 provided for the section between the federal border and the Goch AS again in urgency level I, as did the Alps - Kamp-Lintfort section. The Sonsbeck - Alps section was listed as an ongoing project. In addition, there was the expansion between AS Neuss-West and AS Neuss-Norf to six lanes in urgency level I or as an ongoing project.

    The third law amending the Act on Highway Expansion of April 21, 1986 contained the line between the federal border and AS Kleve as an ongoing project, as well as the six-lane expansion between today's AS Neuss-Hafen and Neuss-Norf. In addition, there was the six-lane expansion between AS Neuss-Norf and AK Neuss-Süd in urgent needs and between AK Neuss-Süd and the Kreuz Köln-Nord in further needs.

    According to the fourth law amending the law on the expansion of the trunk road of November 15, 1993, the six-lane expansion of the A 57 between the Meerbusch junction (formerly known as "Kreuz Strümp") and the Köln-Nord junction was urgently required. The requirement plan of the Fifth Act on the Amendment of the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 contained the six-lane expansion between the Meerbusch intersection and the Köln-Nord intersection as an ongoing or fixed project. Furthermore, the six-lane expansion between Kreuz Kamp-Lintfort and Kreuz Meerbusch was intended as an urgent requirement.

    The two sections Kreuz Meerbusch ( A 44 ) to Kreuz Kaarst ( A 52 ) and Kreuz Neuss-West to Dreieck Neuss-Süd have already been completed with six lanes. As part of the expansion, the Neuss-Hafen junction was also completely rebuilt. The intervening section from Kreuz Kaarst to Kreuz Neuss-West was completed by December 13, 2015. Partial clearance for the section south of the Holzbüttgen junction took place on July 3, 2014, so that the length of the construction section was reduced from initially six to around three kilometers.

    The southernmost section behind the Köln-Nord motorway junction is already largely six-lane. The motorway ends after the junction Cologne-Ehrenfeld ; from there it runs in a trough and partly in the tunnel as a six-lane expressway ( K 4 ) in the direction of the city center to Innere Kanalstrasse .

    A former, but largely intact, makeshift airfield is located between the Sonsbeck and Alpen junctions . The rest areas Hamb and Bönninghardt served as parking spaces.

    The Krefeld-Gartenstadt junction was built as a preliminary construction work for the federal motorway 51 Aachen - Duisburg in the form of a motorway junction. After this planning had been given up, the L 473 was implemented instead of the A 51, which offers a direct connection to the Duisburg port (“Logport”).

    At the Krefeld-Oppum junction, the A 524 should cross the A 57. This is why the feeder road there was also named the A 524 until 2003.

    Since the southern bypass of Neuss by the A 46 is no longer planned, there is a parallel route between the two motorways between the Neuss-West motorway junction and the Neuss-Süd motorway triangle.

    The elaborate and winding junction Cologne-Worringen is striking. This involves preliminary structural work for a motorway junction with the A 54 , which was never built , and which was to connect the A 61 , A 57, A 59 and A 3 motorways. Only a small part of the planned A 54 was realized in the form of the A 542 between the crosses Langenfeld and Monheim- Süd.

    The Cologne-Chorweiler junction is only set up in and from the south, i.e. from Cologne or from the Köln-Nord junction. If you want to go north from here, you either have to "turn around" at the Köln-Nord motorway junction or use one of the neighboring driveways. It is planned to fully expand the exit - possibly even before the planned six-lane expansion of the A57 in this section.

    Motorway exit 1 is part of the rest area of ​​the former border station to the Netherlands and is located between the Goch suburbs "Hommersum" and "Hassum". It is not officially operated and some of the roads leading to it are marked as official routes.

    South of the Köln-Nord junction (to the Köln-Bickendorf junction), the North Rhine-Westphalia Road Administration has set up one of the three routes in North Rhine-Westphalia so far, on which the hard shoulder can be opened for driving if necessary, primarily during rush hour. This increases the throughput capacity on this busy route.

    Current state of development and concrete expansion planning

    The A57 runs in four lanes from the Dutch border to Kamp-Lintfort.

    From Kamp-Lintfort to Cologne-Nord, the A57 is to be extended to six lanes over a length of 63 km. The individual sections are as follows from north to south (as of June 2019):

    • Expansion section Moers (7.2 km from AS Kamp-Lintfort to AS Moers) - preliminary planning began in 2018 (currently four lanes)
    • The Moers motorway junction is also to be rebuilt. The preliminary planning for the expansion has already been approved. Further planning began in mid-2018.
    • Expansion section Kapellen (5.7 km from AS Moers to AS Krefeld-Gartenstadt) - The preliminary draft of the "Kapellen" section has been approved. (currently four-lane)

    Temporary bridge near Nievenheim in September 2012

    Unknown persons set fire to a stack of plastic pipes below a motorway bridge on February 14, 2012 at around 12:10 am (the pipes were stored on an asphalt dirt road from Nievenheim to Zons). The bridge spanned the A 57 between the Neuss-Süd triangle (No. 24) and the Dormagen junction (No. 25) northwest of downtown Dormagen ( Lage ).

    Temperatures of up to 1000 ° C arose; the smoke obscured the traffic on the bridge. There was a collision of six trucks and 15 cars. The driver of a car was killed and 13 people were injured.

    The A 57 was closed in both directions due to the suspected risk of the bridge collapsing. The damaged bridge was demolished and initially replaced by two makeshift bridges from the Bundeswehr. The bridge was provisionally reopened on April 4, 2012. As a result, a new bridge structure was erected from two independent bridge bodies lying parallel. It is already designed for the planned six-lane expansion of the A57 in this section and will be operated with four lanes until then. After the western bridge had been completed in February 2017, all traffic could be relocated to this new part of the bridge and the temporary bridges dismantled. The bridge was completed in mid-May 2018.
