The federal motorway 443 (abbreviation: BAB 443 ) - short form: Autobahn 443 (abbreviation: A 443 ) - led from Unna to Unna-Süd and was made available to traffic in this area together with the opening of the A 44 at the end of 1972.

Originally it was planned that the A 443 in the north from the Hammer district Lerche with connection to the A 2 via a connection to the never built extension of the A 42 near Bönen to Unna and further south from Unna-Süd to Iserlohn with connection to the A 46 runs in the area of the current junction Iserlohn-Seilersee. The A 443 should therefore be an important crossbar between the above. Form west-east lines. In sections, this route was implemented as the B 233 and state road 679. However, due to resistance to the fragmentation of a landscape protection area and changes in national traffic planning, a short section remained between the B 233 in the south and the B 1 at the northern end of the A 443.

On January 1, 2006, the A 443 was finally downgraded to the B 233 or L 679. Nevertheless, the route was still mostly marked with the old blue motorway signs and signposted as A 443 for over 3 years. As part of renovation work, the old signs were gradually converted to yellow signposts. Since the end of 2009, the old motorway has been officially designated as a motor vehicle route.

The reason for the downgrading is that the district of Unna and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia financed the construction of a new roundabout in order to be able to connect the (former) motorway directly to the Unna industrial park . The federal government would have been responsible for motorways. The roundabout was opened to traffic at the end of October 2006.
