  • The federal autobahn 680 (abbreviation: BAB 680 ) - short form: autobahn 680 (abbreviation: A 680 ) - led from the end of the autobahn in Darmstadt -Ost (Heinrichstraße) via the Darmstadt-Ost junction (junction with the A 49 ) and Roßdorf to Dieburg . There was a connection to the A 683 at the Dieburger Dreieck before the autobahn ended east of Dieburg at the old route of the B 26 . Other (now discarded) plans envisaged continuing the route via Babenhausen to a connection to the A 3 near Aschaffenburg . Thus there would have been a connection to the southern (also not built) extension of the A 45 in the direction of Kirchheim unter Teck and to the A 687 , now the B 469 .

In the 1980s, the autobahn was downgraded to a federal highway and is now part of federal highway 26 and between Dieburg-Mitte and Dieburger Dreieck also part of federal highway 45 . The old route of the B 26 between Darmstadt and Dieburg was also graduated. This ended the dense parallel routing of two long-distance roads, and traffic could be calmed down through the town. Curiously, the city of Dieburg now has two bypass roads that run side by side in a section of 4 km at a distance of approx. 500 m: the old route of the B 26 and the old route of the A 680, now the new B 26.

During the rededication, only the blue signposts were replaced by yellow ones. The blue kilometers and the motorway-like equipment with parking lots, hard shoulders and generous curve radii were retained. After the rededication, however, a part of the hard shoulder near Darmstadt was rededicated as bus lanes or temporarily removed (in the meantime rebuilt).

In the late 1990s, the Dieburg-Mitte exit was expanded into a clover leaf . In addition, the Gundernhausen exit was added between Dieburg-West and Roßdorf-Ost , which had already existed provisionally during the construction of the motorway. At that time only the Darmstadt-Gundernhausen section was completed. After the opening in the direction of Dieburg, the exit was initially given up. In addition, the maximum speed on the entire route was limited to 130 km / h. In 2012 the speed limit was lifted after work on the central barrier, but reintroduced in 2016 between Darmstadt and Roßdorf Ost.

    New plans

In the course of the construction of the Darmstadt north-east bypass , the connection to Heinrichstrasse, which is currently still regulated by traffic lights, was to be rebuilt so that it does not cross. The four-lane section should be extended to the Ostbahnhof. However, these plans were abandoned in 2011. Between Dieburger Dreieck and Babenhausen, the line is to be expanded into a three-lane crossing-free road. A decision has still not been made on a Babenhausen bypass due to disputes over the route.
