The Federal Highway 553 (abbreviation: BAB 553 ) - Short Form: Highway 553 (abbreviation: A 553 ) - begins at the junction Bliesheim as a continuation of A 1 in the straight orientation and leads from there to the north edge of Brühl . It replaces the federal highway 51 in this area .

history

The planning of the A 553 was also temporarily under the title A 533 .

The original plan was to extend the motorway to the A 4 in the south of Cologne. A cross connection to the east across the Rhine to the A 59 was also planned. At least the extension of the A 553 to the south of Cologne is no longer in planning.

Meschenich bypass

Traffic to the south of Cologne continues to use the heavily used federal highway 51 through Cologne- Meschenich or the Brühler Tangente (L 150 / Kerkrader Strasse), which leads to the A 555 Cologne-Bonn. The L 150 has now been expanded to four lanes between the A 553 and the A 555 in order to at least partially alleviate the congestion problem. In addition, the existing federal highway 51 is to be run as the B51n, bypassing the Cologne district of Meschenich, to the Cologne-Eifeltor junction on the A 4 and - in some cases, 4-lane - to close the gap at least in part. The latter also makes sense because the A 553 also drives to the Cologne-Eifeltor container station and this leads to considerable pollution of the population through truck traffic, especially in Cologne-Meschenich. The construction work for the Meschenich bypass officially started with a press conference for the symbolic groundbreaking on January 24, 2020.

Rhine clasp

In the draft of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 (March 2016) the continuation of the A 553 from "AK Köln-Godorf" (link with the A 555 on the left bank of the Rhine ) to "AD Köln-Lind" (link with the A 59 on the right bank of the Rhine ) was called "Rheinspange" , still included as an additional requirement with planning rights , the project was upgraded to the urgent requirement category until its adoption (August 2016) . The continuation of the A 553 to Cologne-Porz-Lind should also include the construction of a new Rhine crossing, with which the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke in Bonn and the Rhine bridge Cologne-Rodenkirchen should be relieved. This should either be designed as a bridge or a tunnel; In addition, according to the ideas of the citizens and politicians, a crossing for regional and supra-local rail and light rail traffic should also be considered. At a citizens' event on July 27, 2018, the North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst announced that the link should be Template: future / in 5 yearscompleted by 2030 . The exact route of the Rheinspange should be determined by 2020. However, there is massive resistance to a bridge, both from Wesseling and from the Cologne district of Porz-Langel on the right bank of the Rhine and the neighboring Niederkassel-Lülsdorf . There they are more in favor of a tunnel solution or reject the construction project as a whole. The project is controversial among the population from Wesseling, Niederkassel-Lülsdorf , and the Cologne district of Porz-Langel , through whose urban areas the extension of the A 553 would probably run. Several citizens' initiatives have been founded to try to prevent the construction of the Rhine crossing.
