    1. Further needs

The federal autobahn 524 (abbreviation: BAB 524 ) - short form: autobahn 524 (abbreviation: A 524 ) - is a seven kilometer long autobahn that leads from Duisburg-Rahm to the Breitscheid triangle . It emerged in the 1980s from Bundesstraße 288 (B 288), which at the time led from Krefeld all the way to the Breitscheid motorway triangle.

The expansion of the previously four-lane B 288 to the A 524 from Rahm in a westerly direction to the new Duisburg-Süd motorway junction was carried out from 2010 to November 2014; this section was listed in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan as an “urgent need”. The eastern section from the current end of the motorway to the new intersection should be opened together with the intersection in 2013, the connection to the new B 8 should be completed in 2012.

The A 524 ends at the Duisburg-Süd motorway junction, where it changes to the B 288 and intersects with the A 59 or B 8. The expansion of the motorway junction was completed in November 2014.

    outlook

The expansion of the remaining section of the B 288 over the Rhine to the A 57 is only part of the "further requirement" and is therefore currently still being planned; construction will not begin before 2015 [obsolete] . In addition to the existing listed Krefeld-Uerdinger bridge, a new Rhine bridge is required. The Mündelheim crossing is likely to be implemented as a trough or tunnel .

    Effects

One of the effects of the new A 524 is the lifting of the previous speed limit at Angermunder Straße (Duisburg-Rahm). Rahm is already crossed by a high-speed line operated by Deutsche Bahn, on which trains travel at up to 200 km / h. The existing noise pollution will be increased by the lifting.

Another impact was the demolition of the old oil mill on Verloher Kirchweg . This previously led a shadowy existence. Despite major structural changes, it had a medieval core that has only been insufficiently researched archaeologically . Among other things, parts of the old oil mill technology are suspected to be there. The above-ground parts of the building were demolished in May 2014.

On the other hand, the expansion of the B 288 to the A 524 increases traffic safety, because the driving directions are now separated by a median and a hard shoulder is available. New noise barriers are supposed to protect the residents from the emissions from car traffic. To compensate for the encroachment on nature, Straßen.NRW is laying out 32 hectares of so-called compensation areas.

    history

Until 2003, part of the Krefeld-Oppum junction on the A 57 was also named the A 524. The A 57 should intersect with the A 524 here.
