  • The federal highway 91 (abbreviation: BAB 91 ) - short form: Autobahn 91 (abbreviation: A 91 ) - was a planned highway Feuchtwangen - Nördlingen - Donauwörth - Augsburg - Landsberg am Lech - Schongau - Füssen . The section between Fremdingen and Harburg (Swabia) (shortly before Donauwörth) was also called the Ries motorway , as the route there cuts through the Nördlinger Ries . The considerations for the construction of this motorway originated in the 1970s, as the intention was to set up an efficient connection between Feuchtwangen and Füssen via Donauwörth and Augsburg. The plans for implementation were discarded in the early 1980s.

    Planning history and construction

In the Weimar Republic , a connection from the Feuchtwangen area via Nördlingen, Donauwörth, Augsburg, Landsberg / Lech, Schongau and the Füssen area was not provided for in the plan for the so-called “top network”.

Under the rule of the National Socialists, such a connection was not included in the Reichsautobahnnetz.

In the expansion plan for the federal highways of the law of July 27, 1957, there was also no motorway connection between Feuchtwangen, Augsburg and Füssen. The federal highway 2 Nuremberg - Donauwörth - Augsburg as well as the federal roads 17 and 23 Augsburg - Landsberg / Lech - Schongau - Garmisch-Partenkirchen with continuation to Innsbruck (federal highway 2) were included in the “blue network” of the federal highways to be expanded and newly built. The Feuchtwangen - Nördlingen - Donauwörth route was not taken into account.

This changed with the requirement plan of the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from June 30, 1971. This did not yet contain a motorway connection between Feuchtwangen, Donauwörth, Augsburg, Landsberg / Lech and Füssen. But a four-lane federal road connection between Feuchtwangen and Landsberg / Lech was included. In addition, a new two-lane federal road between Landsberg / Lech and Steingaden and between Lechbruck and Hopferau was planned. The project was therefore divided into the following sections:

    • B 25n : to the west of Feuchtwangen (triangle with the route later designated as Federal Motorway 7 ) - to the south of Feuchtwangen (four lanes, urgency level II)
    • B 25n south of Feuchtwangen - Donauwörth-Nord (triangle with the B 2) (four lanes, urgency level III)
    • B 2: Donauwörth-Nord - Donauwörth-Süd (B 16) (four lanes, ongoing project)
    • B 2: Donauwörth-Süd - Nordendorf (four lanes, 1st lane completed, 2nd lane in urgency level II)
    • B 2n: Nordendorf - Langweid am Lech (four lanes, urgency level II)
    • B 2n: Langweid - Augsburg (intersection with what will later become the Federal Motorway 8 ) - Haunstetten (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Haunstetten - Oberottmarshausen (triangle with the "Autobahn 88" Weiden - Regensburg - Augsburg) - Graben / Lagerlechfeld (four lanes, ongoing project)
    • B 17n: Graben / Lagerlechfeld - Landsberg / Lech (cross with the B 12, later designated as Bundesautobahn 96 ) (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Landsberg / Lech (junction with the B 12) - Schongau - north of Steingaden (triangle with the "Autobahn 22", later designated as Bundesautobahn 98 ) (two-lane, urgency level II)
    • B 17n: Lechbruck (triangle with the later A 98) - Roßhaupten - Hopferau (triangle with the later A 7) (two-lane, urgency level II).

While no concrete plans were found in the maps between Feuchtwangen and Donauwörth, things looked different between Donauwörth, Augsburg, Landsberg / Lech, Schongau and Steingaden since 1969. This resulted in the following route:

The entire route was intended for the four-lane motorway-like expansion and new construction.

With the restructuring of the federal motorway network, which was introduced with effect from January 1, 1975, the Feuchtwangen - Donauwörth - Augsburg - Landsberg / Lech and Lechbruck - Hopferau routes were named "Federal Motorway 91". The Landsberg / Lech - Schongau - Steingaden section had not yet been clarified as a motorway. In the Augsburg area, the route was also modified: between Langweid and Oberottmarshausen, the route was no longer to run directly through Augsburg, but to the east around the city. Nevertheless, the plan also included a motorway connection from Langweid via Augsburg to Oberottmarshausen. In Zahling (northeast Augsburg) also a triangle of A was with the 91 Federal highway 90 planned. The route changed near Augsburg now had the following course:

In the federal government's network plan of January 1976, only the construction of the Feuchtwangen - Augsburg - Landsberg / Lech line was planned.

In the requirements plan of the law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 5, 1976, the Landsberg / Lech - Steingaden and Lechbruck - Hopferau sections were only included as two-lane new federal road construction projects under the designation B 17n. The following was done in detail:

    • A 91: west of Feuchtwangen (triangle with the A 7) - south of Feuchtwangen (four lanes, 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane as possible additional requirement)
    • A 91: south of Feuchtwangen - Donauwörth-Nordwest (four lanes, possible further needs)
    • A 91: Donauwörth-Süd - Langweid (four lanes, 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway as a possible additional requirement)
    • A 91: south of Nordendorf - Dasing - Oberottmarshausen - Landsberg / Lech (junction with the A 96) (four lanes, 1st lane in urgency level Ib, 2nd lane as a possible additional requirement)
    • B 17n: Landsberg / Lech (junction with the A 96) - Ellighofen (two lanes in urgency level Ib)
    • B 17n: Ellighofen - Hohenfurch (two lanes as a possible additional requirement)
    • B 17n: Hohenfurch - Schongau - Peiting (two-lane in urgency level Ib)
    • B 17n: Peiting - Steingaden (A 98) (two lanes as a possible additional requirement)
    • B 17n: Lechbruck (A 98) - Hopferau (A 7) (two lanes in urgency level Ib)

In addition, the four-lane new construction and expansion of the B 2 and the B 17 between Langweid (triangle with the A 91) and Oberottmarshausen (triangle with the A 91) through Augsburg are planned. The project was structured as follows:

    • B 2n: Langweid - Gersthofen-Nord (four lanes, 1st carriageway completed, 2nd carriageway in urgency level Ib)
    • B 2n: OU Gersthofen (four lanes, ongoing project)
    • B 2n / B 17n: Gersthofen-Süd - Haunstetten (four lanes in urgency level Ia)
    • B 17n: Haunstetten - Oberottmarshausen (four lanes, ongoing project).

The route north of Augsburg was then changed again. In 1979 the following picture emerged:

    • east of Nordendorf or west of Ellgau - west of Thierhaupten - west of Todtenweis - west of Rehling - west of Anwalting - south-west of Aulzhausen - west of Zahling - west of Dasing - west of Friedberg-Paar - east of Friedberg-Ottmaring - west of Bachern - south-east of Kissing - north-west of Mering - north-west of Unterbergen - Oberottmarshausen.

With the second law amending the law on the expansion of federal highways from 1971 to 1985 from August 25, 1980, the end of federal highway 91 came. Instead, the new construction and expansion of federal highways 2, 17 and 25 was pushed forward:

    • B 25: Connection to A 7 southwest of Feuchtwangen - south of Feuchtwangen (two-lane, urgency level II)
    • B 25: OU Schopfloch (two-lane, ongoing project)
    • B 25: Dinkelsbühl - Wilburgstetten (two-lane, urgency level I)
    • B 25: OU Nördlingen (two-lane, urgency level I)
    • B 2: Donauwörth-Nordheim - Nordendorf (four-lane expansion, urgency level I)
    • B 2n: Nordendorf - Thierhaupten - Rehling - AS Augsburg-Ost (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 2n: Friedberg- Derching area (A 8) - west of Friedberg or east of Augsburg-Hochzoll - west of Kissing - north of Mering (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 2n: north of Mering - Oberottmarshausen (four lanes, urgency level II)
    • B 17n: Oberottmarshausen - Landsberg / Lech (cross with the A 96) (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Landsberg / Lech (junction with the A 96) - Ellighofen (B 17 old) (two-lane, urgency level I)
    • B 17: OU Schongau / Peiting (two-lane, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Steingaden - Lechbruck - Roßhaupten (B 16) (two-lane, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Roßhaupten (B 16) - Hopferau (two-lane, urgency level II)

In addition, there were the projects on the route through Augsburg:

    • B 2: south of Meitingen - Langweid - Gersthofen-Nord (four-lane expansion, urgency level I)
    • B 2: OU Gersthofen (four-lane, ongoing project)
    • B 2 / B 17: Gersthofen-Süd - Stadtbergen-Leitershofen (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 2 / B 17: Stadtbergen-Leitershofen - Haunstetten (four lanes, ongoing project).

With the requirements plan of the Third Act amending the Act on the Extension of Federal Highways of April 21, 1986, the deletion of the A 91 remained. Furthermore, the extension and construction of the federal highways 2, 17 and 25 was carried out:

    • B 25: Connection to A 7 southwest of Feuchtwangen - south of Feuchtwangen (two-lane, urgency level II)
    • B 25: OU Nördlingen (two-lane, urgency level II)
    • B 2: Donauwörth-Nordheim - Nordendorf (four-lane expansion, urgency level II)
    • B 2: Nordendorf - Gersthofen-Nord (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 2 / B 17: Gersthofen - Stadtbergen-Leitershofen (four lanes, ongoing project)
    • B 2n: Friedberg- Derching area (A 8) - west of Friedberg or east of Augsburg-Hochzoll - west of Kissing - north of Mering - Oberottmarshausen (four lanes, urgency level II)
    • B 17n: Oberottmarshausen - Landsberg / Lech (cross with the A 96) (four lanes, urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Landsberg / Lech (junction with the A 96) - Ellighofen (B 17 old) (two-lane, urgency level II)
    • B 17: OU Schongau / Peiting (two-lane, predominantly urgency level I)
    • B 17n: Roßhaupten (B 16) - Hopferau (two-lane, urgency level II)

In the requirements plan of the Fourth Act to Change the Highway Extension Act of November 15, 1993, the A 91 was not reintroduced. The expansion and construction of the federal highways was also undertaken:

    • B 25: Connection to A 7 southwest of Feuchtwangen - south of Feuchtwangen (two-lane, further needs)
    • B 25: OU Dinkelsbühl (two-lane, additional requirements)
    • B 25: OU Greiselbach (two-lane, urgent need)
    • B 25: OU Wallerstein, Ehringen, Baldingen, Nördlingen (two-lane, urgent need)
    • B 25: OU Möttingen (two-lane, additional requirements)
    • B 2: Donauwörth-Nordheim - Gersthofen-Nord (four-lane expansion, urgent need)
    • B 2: six-lane expansion between AS Augsburg-West (A 8) and Gersthofen-Süd (ongoing project)
    • B 2n: Friedberg-Derching area (A 8) - west of Friedberg or east of Augsburg-Hochzoll - west of Kissing - north of Mering - Oberottmarshausen (four lanes, further needs)
    • B 17: Graben / Lager Lechfeld - Landsberg / Lech (cross with the A 96) (four lanes, urgent need)

    • B 17: OU Schongau / Peiting (two-lane, ongoing project)
    • B 17: Steingaden - Hopferau (two-lane, further needs)

The requirement plan of the Fifth Act to Change the Highway Expansion Act of October 4, 2004 did not result in a resumption of the A 91. The expansion and new construction of the B 2, 17 and 25 was also planned:

    • B 25: Connection to A 7 southwest of Feuchtwangen - south of Feuchtwangen (two-lane, further needs)
    • B 25: OU Dinkelsbühl (two-lane, urgent need)

    • B 17: Steingaden - Hopferau (two-lane, further needs with identified high ecological risk).

    Replacement for the motorway

Instead of the autobahn, the federal highways running there have been expanded since the 1980s. In this context, the route was partially changed.

B25leads in a single lane from Feuchtwangen to Donauwörth. It is partly equipped with overtaking facilities. Since December 2009, the last three kilometers at Donauwörth have been in a condition similar to that of a motorway.
B2 Motorway-like from Donauwörth to Augsburg.
B17 Motorway-like from Augsburg to Landsberg am Lech.
B17 single lane, partly with overtaking opportunities, from Landsberg am Lech to Füssen.
