The federal motorway 659 (abbreviation: BAB 659 ) - short form: Autobahn 659 (abbreviation: A 659 ) - leads from the Weinheim motorway junction to the Viernheimer junction . It was built in the 1960s as a feeder to the "Bergstraßenautobahn" ( A 5 ) opened in 1968 and replaces the original Viernheim bypass ( B 38 ) on this part .

The A 659 begins at the Weinheim motorway junction as an extension of the federal highway 38 coming through the Saukopftunnel from the Odenwald.Directly behind the Weinheim junction, you drive through a tight S-curve, which in the direction of Weinheim can only be driven at 80 km / h when it is wet. Directly behind it is a petrol station in the direction of Mannheim , behind it two exits for 2 km towards Viernheim , whereby the Viernheim exit has additional entrances and exits for a direct connection to the Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum . In the direction of Weinheim there is a gas station between Viernheimer Kreuz and the Viernheim junction. Since the renewal of the lane coming from Mannheim, the A 659 has no speed limit, except when it is wet at the S-curve between the Weinheimer Kreuz and the Aral petrol station. Here 120,100 and 80 km / h are prescribed.

An extension to Mannheim- Feudenheim with a connection to the B 38a (Rhein-Neckar-Schnellweg) was originally planned . In the meantime, in connection with urban development in Mannheim, from the end of the autobahn until around 2030, the B 38 will be dismantled as a city street.

Along with the A 656 and the B 47, the A 659 is one of the three ways to quickly switch between the A 6 or A 67 and A 5 motorways that run in parallel .
