The federal highway 38a (abbreviation: B 38a), also called Rhein-Neckar-Schnellweg , is a federal highway in Germany . It leads from Mannheim - Feudenheim to Mannheim-Casterfeld and, with a motorway-like expansion, is an important eastern bypass for road traffic in Mannheim .
course
The B 38a begins at the entrance to Mannheim- Feudenheim and heads south, where it crosses the Neckar and the tracks of the Upper Rhine Railway on the Carlo-Schmid Bridge, which is in an arch , before passing the Mannheim airport and the Maimarkt area . Then it crosses under the A 656 at the Mannheim-Neckarau junction, which has been developed as a motorway junction. In the further course it leads past the SAP arena before it crosses the Mannheim marshalling yard by means of an elevated bridge structure . Finally, it ends in the southeast of Mannheim with a connection to the B 36 . An extension leads straight ahead towards the large power station to the Rhine ferry Altrip – Mannheim or to the Rheinauhafen. For the B 38a, the truck toll applies on the entire route .
history
After the development of traffic in the 1960s, there was a large gap between the Neckarbrücken in the city center and the Neckarbrücke in the far east of the Mannheim-Seckenheim district and the A 6 motorway . The gap was to be closed with a new bridge, which was to be part of a middle motorway ring around Mannheim, in order to relieve the inner city of traffic as a tangent.
The B 38a was built in sections as a motorway-like expressway from the 1970s. At the end of 1983, the 2.3 kilometer long section between the marshalling yard and Casterfeldstrasse (B 36) was released for traffic, and in 1992 the junction-free connection to the B 36 was opened ties up.
The actual ring, in the south-west the extension over the Rhine to the B 9 and in the north over the B 38 to the A 659 , was not implemented. The Altrip community on the left bank of the Rhine and nature conservationists fought vigorously against the construction of the gap closure. The city of Ludwigshafen also did not actively support the route. In the meantime, it is no longer in the planning stage - as confirmed again for the 2015 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan. The originally planned extension to the north through the “Feudenheimer Au” nature reserve towards the B 38 and A 659 has also been out of discussion for years.
