The Carlo-Schmid-Brücke crosses the Neckar between the Mannheim districts of Neuostheim and Feudenheim .

It runs as part of the B 38a from Feudenheim over the Neckar to the level of the Mannheim airport , where the B 38a continues past the Maimarkt area towards the Mannheim-Neckarau junction of the A 656 and SAP Arena . The bridge is named after the late SPD politician Carlo Schmid . It has up to three lanes in each direction. On the upstream side it has a footpath and cycle path, which can only be reached via a long staircase on the southern Neuostheim side.

history

The Carlo Schmid Bridge was built in the early 1970s, with the first half being completed in 1972 and the other part in 1973.

The bridge is part of the federal highway 38a. The connection to Neuostheim on the south side of the bridge is not free of crossings. The entrances and exits necessary for crossing-free traffic were structurally prepared on the bridge but not realized. The corresponding four connection segments are still present and recognizable on the building today.
